Just checking here to learn if there have been any issues after updating to 5.1 on 4S iphone.

Running on 5.0.1 and no glitches whatsoever. Don't want what's working just fine to suddenly not.

Thanks.

I updated my wife's 4s Sunday night. No problems that she's noticed so far.
The 5.1 update adds a quick-access function on the lock screen, so you don't have to unlock your phone just to take a photo. At least, this is the first time we've noticed it.

It was there before, but it required a double-press on the home button.

Ah. Thanks. Never knew that. I'm guessing a lot of users didn't either, and thus the new on-screen function.

I actually prefer the double-tap to activate the camera button myself, but that's likely just b/c I have it memorized at this point.

Otherwise, no issues that I've run into on my or my wife's phone.

Biggest downside for me: the loss of being able to use shortcuts to get to specific preferences (without jailbreaking).

Why is Bluetooth under General? A shortcut right to Bluetooth preferences as well as many others was great. Apple killed it.

No problems here, iP4s.

I also preferred the double-click to activate the camera button because it was much easier, just blind double-click the home button while keeping eyes focused on the intended pic. No need to after clicking the home button b) visually find the camera icon, c) visually properly hit the camera icon, d) visually swipe in the correct direction. The extra visual steps are horrible from a photographer's ergonomics viewpoint.

IMO this is a significant loss of ergonomic functionality for folks who care just to make the feature more readily obvious to folks who do not care. Bad move.

FWIW I did feedback to Apple: Easy fix, however: simply re-add the home button double-click as a choice to initiate the camera. If you agree you too should feed back to Apple.

Allen, didn't the double-click just give you a camera icon that you had to touch? I don't remember it actually bringing up the camera.

Maybe. I don't remember exactly either. But I shoot a lot and definitely notice the difference. No doubt it will improve with practice, but getting the swipe right is distracting as regards photo setup. My brain insists on following the whoop-de-whoops happening on the display, distracting from the subject. Obviously just a tiny thing, but IMO a step in the wrong direction.

I can't think of any downside. In my case: the battery seems more accurate, wifi is more reliable on secure networks, camera access from a locked screen is now easier, the new Siri languages and dialects are cool... I can't think of anything else.
I did the software update directly on the 4s btw, piece of cake.

Hey all,

Thanks so much for your thoughts.

I only just discovered the double click of the home button from the locked screen to find the camera icon so will be interested if I like or dislike what they've changed as you've discussed. (Does anyone know why a blue bar with large forward, reverse and play arrows appears at the top of the screen when double clicking from the locked screen? On 5.0.1?)

Anyway, as always, appreciate the wisdom of the group here. Guess I'll do the update.

Biggest benefit of iOS 5.1 was that Safari doesn't start with Bookmarks open...that drove me nuts.

The player controls for the Music app?

That's been there since 2007, AFAIK. AT LEAST since 2009, which is when I got my first iPhone.

My wife only noticed them popping-up after the 5.0.1 update. From a dark screen, she would press the Home button to get the login screen. She would sometimes get both the Login and these big audio controls. But only sometimes. It was really strange.

Yup. Only sometimes, strange.

And I have never used the music app on the 4s because I have not loaded my music on it yet. Unless maybe it applies to Siri and message playback.

They only appear if you are (or were) playing music.

Inadvertent double-press on the home button.

The controls have been there for years and years, and the purpose is obvious: to give you player controls without having to unlock the phone and open the music player app.

oh yeah, I can't believe I forgot about this one. in fact, I think that this is the single most important fix due to the 'pain in the ass' factor.

Is it just me or did the clock app get a minor change? I thought it used to have an option for "sleep ipod" but now it says "stop playing" (which does the same thing).

Does it update the weather app icon to display the forecasted weather? Or is Tim reiterating the idea of "look out the freaking windows"?
