Oh how wrong that article is. Steel can easily be melted by fire, especially steel with that much tension in it. Not a normal fire, but a jet engine fuel induced fire will do. This is why the WTC's steel beams were covered in heat retardant. However, there was one flaw. In the explosion the heat retardant was blown off the beams, and the naked steel beams were exposed to the fire, melting them. The WTC probably would have stood if it wasn't for that. It was definitely built to withstand an event such as 9/11, but no one forsaw the heat retardant being blow off in the explosion.

I've actually talked to an engineer on the firm who designed the WTC, and then had to investigate why it collapsed later when it was built to withstand something like this.

The thermite reaction is, at its core, little more than burning aluminum. Of course, aluminum requires extremely high temperatures in order to burn properly, and a steady supply of oxygen (thus the iron-oxide component in thermite). If several tons of aluminum were to be suddenly placed into the building, exposed to rust of the type that often coats structural steel after several decades, and then exposed to extremely high temperatures such as that caused by burning jet fuel, there is a chance that a thermite reaction could result. The problem with the mainstream theory, then, is that it would require many tons of aluminum to suddenly be introduced into the towers and exposed to the structural steel, and then set on fire. Just one thing: airplanes are largely made of aluminum, and so the mainstream theory presents the necessary conditions after all. The odds don't seem terribly high, but they are nonzero.

Thus, even in the unlikely event that thermite reactions were involved in the collapse of the WTC, that does not disprove the mainstream explanation.
