A lot of "ethnic" foods get called weird and potentially disgusting by Europeans and North Americans and other members of 1st world countries, but there are a lot of foods that we eat that really are quite disgusting when you think about it. Here are a few:

1) Milk: Excretions from modified sweat glands of various animals.
2) Cheese: Milk (see above) that is partially digested with animal stomach juices (or synthetic equivalents) and then eaten immediately or else sometimes left to sit for months before consumption. Some are further laced with fungi or bacteria for additional flavour.
3) Yoghurt: Milk (also see above) that is infested with live bacteria and left to get digested.
4) Beer: Grains left to ferment using fungi, until they die from intoxication from their own waste.
5) Vegemite and marmite: Concentrated extract of spent fungus. See beer.
6) Foie gras: Livers from force fed geese until they have severe fatty liver disease.
7) Raw oysters
8) Haggis: Entrails of animals all mashed up and stuffed in a giant sausage.
9) Blood pudding
10) Jellied cow tongue
11) Lobster: Giant insect-like sea creatures that eat dead animal tissue that settles on the bottom of the ocean.
12) Sweetbread: One of main immune organs of young mammals.
13) Head cheese: Scraps of animal heads all jellied up into a sliceable ball.

Etc.

BTW, I love a lot of these "disgusting" foods. I can't say I've tried vegemite or marmite though. I have tried haggis, and it was horrible.

Pretty well anything sweet is actually made out of heavily modified corn. Also gravy is pretty gross if you think about it. Frankly anything involving meat is pretty nasty. In general we pretty well live by killing other things.

What is gross about gravy? Unless you're using animal fat instead of a roux, it's pretty clean.

I've been vegetarian for the better part of the year, and what's funny is that the moral outrage came after the fact. In addition to that though, I've avoided milk for years having preferred vanilla soy milk since my first introduction to it.

Cheese, on the other hand, you'll have to pry from my cold dead hands.

It's to my understanding there and many tribes in Africa that find the consumption of fish disgusting.

Where did you try haggis? It has been banned from import to many places around the world for years due to the whole mad cow thing back in the 80's so much of the haggis that was available outside the UK has been an approximation of the real thing. I had tried haggis in the states and hated it but was convinced to give it another go on a trip to Scotland and loved it.

You may have tried the real thing and hated it, or you may get the chance to try the real thing and still hate it, butif you haven't had a proper Scottish made haggis, don't write it off yet.

The whole concept is disgusting as hell, but it is, in my opinion, damn yummy.

Homemade by a family in Canada, of Scottish ancestry. That said, they could have made a really bad version of it.

Shuck?

I generally like them, but one experience I won't forget is when we shucked one and after the shucking it was still moving slightly. Disturbing. Even more disturbing was the discovery of a parasitic crab inside one.

1. Milk, sweetbread, and head cheese are the only things on that list that I find disgusting.

2. Lobsters are basically (delicious) giant, underwater cockroaches.

Anything that is "universal" should be taken off of the list. Fermented products might be "disgusting" on some abstract intellectual level, but they have been more or less ubiquitous for thousands of years.

How about Japanese natto (fermented soy beans)? I love the stuff, but man, it stinks like bad cheese, it's sticky and gooey, and when it's in your mouth it feels all slimey.

Chinese used to consider cheese extremely weird only just a couple of decades ago.

If the disgust isn't about the fermentation itself, then that's a different issue, isn't it?

Well, my main point was just that what North American and Europeans etc. find disgusting in say Asian or African cuisine is really just a cultural thing, because there are a lot of equally (if not more) "disgusting" things in North America and Europe.

Really, how are chicken feet that much grosser than raw oysters? Or even worse, (another for the list -) prairie oysters, aka. Rocky Mountain oysters?

Cheap English tea maybe.

I like good non-oxidized Chinese green tea. The reason most English tea is so heavily oxidized with so much tannin content is because it otherwise wouldn't keep well, transported by sea from China and India to England.

BTW, I've had yak milk tea. That stuff is heavy and very strong tasting. They use heavily oxidized black tea, with water and yak milk and/or butter. It's not great tasting, but still can be welcome in the bitter cold.

It's not just the Scottish that make haggis!

My mother grew up on a ranch south of the Navajo reservation. (Concho, Az) My family heritage is Mexican of Spanish blood. My great grandparents were sheep herders. My mom was describing one of the dishes my grandfather would make after he butchered a sheep, and a light went off and realized she was describing haggis. I have never had the privilege of eating haggis. Some day I may get brave and give it a try.

Deep fried swine skin (aka pork rinds/chicharones) sprinkled with "Louisiana Gem" pepper sauce is good eatin'!

Marmite is awesome. Goes well with cheese too.

Gravy is disgusting because real gravy is made by chucking all the spare bits of meat you get into a pot that stays cooking gently pretty much all the time. Including bones and other bits you wouldn't normally eat.

Make some bacon and sausage. Keep the fat in the pan, throw some flour into it, brown the flour, poor over biscuits. Serve with bacon and sausage. Mmmmmmm.

I went on a Canadian fishing trip with my father in law to the Sioux Lookout, Ontario area. (Lac Seul, Minnitaki) If you don't catch any fish for lunch, (and it's hard NOT to) you have the unfortunate privilege of eating this nasty SPAM knock off.

I went on a tour of a luncheon meat factory in Asia when I was a kid. Then we had lunch there. It was a multi-dish feast and every dish had luncheon meat. Even as a kid, by the end of the meal I was grossed out. I normally liked luncheon meat (even SPAM) but there is only so much you can eat in one sitting.

BTW, in Hawaii, there is spam EVERYWHERE. I tried a local dish which was basically a breakfast hash with SPAM and it wouldn't have actually been half bad, except they added even more grease to fry it. SPAM has enough fat in it as it is.

You're for throwing away substantial chunks of an animal whose life was taken specifically for the purpose of providing sustenance to you.

Wasting that is disgusting and respectless.

Just in case that's the result of the classic misconception:

Earl Grey is not tea.

Earl Grey is warehouse floor sweepings camouflaged with perfumed oil to make it seem somewhat palatable. The infusion must be diluted with milk and made less disagreeable with sugar.

Actual tea requires nothing of the sort.

I love tea.

Baconnaise is Kosher?
Baconnaise - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Baconnaise is a kosher mayonnaise-based product that was especially made to taste like bacon. It was created by Justin Esch and Dave Lefkow, founders of J&D's Foods, in November 2008 and sold 40,000 jars within six months.[1] It was test-marketed in Grand Forks, North Dakota, in order to determine the viability of consumers buying the product.[2] After being featured on both The Daily Show and The Oprah Winfrey Show, sales of baconnaise increased significantly, with more than a million jars having been sold.

I make gravy at my workplace nearly every day. The meat may be leftovers but it's not like they're undesirable leftovers. They're just pieces of meat that are carved too small to be useful, and added in with a roux (butter and flour). And sometimes, if it's a roast or something, it's the pieces of meat that have just fallen into a sheet pan off of the roast, which means it's extremely tender meat. Maybe at the Country Buffet it's done differently, but in a nice restaurant or in your own home, gravy's pretty safe.

That's a real gravy. Mmm mmm. Nothing gross about it. Little tiny bits of the leftover meat make it extra tasty. Most restaurants don't make real gravy. They use the premixed crap out of a can that is minced meat in a flour and water base, not using any grease. Now that is disgusting.

Cook 1lb of premium country sausage, I prefer Swaggerty's Medium, then add 2 Tbsp of lard and 1/2 cup of flour. Brown flour to the color you want, then add 4 cups of whole milk and cook to desired thickness. Pour some over fresh biscuits and serve with eggs and hash browns. Hell, just go ahead and cover everything with the gravy, life's short.

No, it ain't health food, but... damn.
