looking to spring for a new G5 for FCP video editing. i want to bulk up on the stock memory. at the apple store pulldown menu, i notice a bunch of memory options that i'm not familar with. can anyone shed some light on the difference between

DDR NON ECC SDRAM

and

DDR ECC SDRAM

...and which option is better for FCP editing, and why?

thanks.

ECC stands for Error Correction Code, which means that it somehow finds computing errors and attempts to fix them. ECC is slower than non ECC because of this, so non ECC would be better for FCP. ECC is also more expensive.

The only recent Macs to support ECC memory are the Xserves.

All other Macs (and nearly all PCs) use non-ECC memory. This has been true for at least 10 years now.

The dual-core PowerMacs support ECC memory.
