Sony: 3G PlayStation Vita not canceled in North America | Joystiq
Despite Amazon's claims to the contrary, Sony reps tell Joystiq that, no, the 3G model of the PlayStation Vita is not canceled in the US. Try and feign surprise! An IGN report from earlier today noted that the Amazon product details for the 3G model of the Vita listed it as "discontinued by manufacturer," but when contacted, Sony's senior director of corporate communication and social media Patrick Seybold immediately refuted the claims.
Man, Sony just can't catch a break.

All the good wide appeal games this year came in the last two months, so I suspect that the hacks have not had time to mature yet. Crysis 2 is also not widely available as Download - I think it's Origin only, which might put some off.
The new Mac Pro has up to 30 MB of cache inside the processor itself. That's more than the HD in my first Mac. Somehow I'm still running out of space.

New South Park Screenshots Are, Well, Pretty Great
Yes, there's a South Park PRG coming. Amazing how long lived this IP is.

EA Invokes First Amendment Protection for Video Games in Trademark Dispute with Helicopter Maker
Electronic Arts asserts that its depiction of the three aircraft "are protected by the First Amendment and the doctrine of nominative fair use." EA notes that Battlefield 3's packaging features a disclaimer stating that the appearance of real-world weapons and vehicles does not constitute any official endorsement by their maker. It adds that "the Bell-manufactured helicopters are not highlighted or given greater prominence than any of the other vehicles within the game."
I'm guessing this is the same thing that is done with guns? I've noticed some names seem intentionally obscured sometimes.

I misread the description in your link. For a second there I thought Black Ops regained the top spot in last month's Xbox Live stats. Wouldn't that be a hoot?

Yeah, I was more active on Reach during December. I might actually make it to Eclipse rank soon.

I also think you have Anniversary edition to thank for that. There seemed to be alot of new people on. Alot of people below an officer rank.

Shows how good MW2 was/is, even when it was released in 2009.

Just how Last-Minute was Nintendo's Circle Pad Pro?
But just how last-minute was the peripheral? Well, Masahiro Sakurai, director on Kid Icarus Uprising for the 3DS, has told Official Nintendo Magazine, "I didn't know the specs of the Circle Pad Pro, or what it looked like, until Monster Hunter 3G was announced, so we weren't able to do anything big with it in the time we had."

Monster Hunter 3G was announced in September 2011, and the attachment went on sale in Japan in December 2011. The 3DS itself only went on sale in Feb/Mar 2011.

Retailers: Drop online pass, and we'll share our profits -Destructoid
A number of retailers across the United Kingdom have said that, if publishers were to drop online passes and start offering better business terms, they'd be happy to offer a slice of pre-owned sales profits.

"As a retail store we would happily share part of the sale from a used game if we get something in return," said indie retailer Gamespod. "Perhaps new games at better prices and no more online codes."
They blinked.

10.) Assassin's Creed: Revelations (360, PS3, PC) 10 Ubisoft

**(includes CE, GOTY editions, bundles, etc. but not those bundled with hardware)
kinect = Just Dance 3 crushing it, really nice placement by Skyrim but it does take some of luster of BF3s 4th place finish.

No where to be found: Uncharted.

Hardware:

Xbox 360: Over 1.7 Million (-8.6%) [Best selling platform for the full year.]
Wii: 1.06 Million (-55%)
PS3: ~936K (-22.6%) [Math from 46% of console sales are Xbox 360 and above numbers.]
It took some time to properly digest these numbers. Sure, it looks like the Wii and PS3 are doing terrible, but that's just not the case.

In it's 6th year, the XBOX is just beating the odds, mostly on the back of kinect. Next, the Wii numbers look extra bad because its sales figures were always insane to begin with. That leaves the PS3 which is... the PS3. COmpared to rest of the market it still doesn't have the pricepoint nor the following. Still good numbers considering we're in a bad economy.

This paper-thin wafer may be the next big thing in force feedback
The haptic effects in this case are created by a "dialectric elastomer film" sandwiched between two layers of electrodes. The electrodes contract when electric current is introduced, causing movement. You still need mass in order to give the player a satisfying feeling of movement and rumble, and in most of the devices we saw—such as a concept cell phone and a modified iPad—the mass was supplied by the device's battery. Vivitouch is able to use the existing components of the device to create rumble, instead of the metal weights used by most game controllers and portable devices.
The cost of these strips will come down in time, and the benefits are many: the technology is smaller than existing motors, it requires less power, and the feedback offered by the rumble is much higher quality than what's currently available. It may take a little convincing for electronics manufacturers to look at a new way of offering force feedback, but Vivitouch has a compelling argument.
Want.

I think kotaku just officially jumped the shark.

Introducing Kotaku Core, For Readers Who Only Want to Know About Video Games
Kotaku Core is a small change that we hope will make a big difference. Users who click on Kotaku Core and choose to make Kotaku.com/KotakuCore their URL of choice will see a subset of the stories we publish every day. Kotaku Core readers will only see stories about video games themselves. You won't see stories about the culture surrounding video games. You'll see more stories about products, fewer stories about people; more stories about what a game company wants to sell you next, fewer feature stories, fewer stories about crime, politics, life and death.

Kotaku Core readers will see previews, reviews, trailers and all the stuff that will keep them informed about which games to play and which to avoid. (Readers of good old Kotaku.com will see no changes; they'll see all of our stories.)

THQ denies rumors about cancellation of its 2014 lineup | Joystiq
Yesterday, a series of tweets by IGDA Mobile SIG chair Kevin Dent alleged that THQ was in financial trouble, and that it was canceling its 2014 game lineup (most notably Warhammer 40k: Dark Millenium Online) and shopping itself out to potential buyers.

This evening, THQ's Australian PR department issued a statement to the contrary, as posted by VG247. "THQ has not cancelled its 2014 line-up, and has not made any decisions regarding the planned MMO," THQ said.
What about Homefront?!

I'm hearing tons of great things about Saints Row: The Third. You like it?

Already have the Team Ico Collection, and have no interest in Crysis 2.

The Splinter Cell revisits however...

They made alot of improvements to 3, but I think 2 had more of a story it, although simplistic. I'm having alot of fun with it. they seem to have made more to do and the achievements seem easier to achieve.

I've recommended it and 2 to a friend. He loved Fable 3 and was looking for another RPG.

Ubisoft DRM allegedly blocking new computer hardware -Destructoid
According to new reports, Ubisoft's oft-maligned DRM is so zealous in its protection of software that it cannot tell the difference between a new computer and a new graphics card. Yep, if you switch out some of your computer's hardware, the DRM will supposedly think you're trying to install Ubisoft games on a new machine.

The issue was discovered by Guru3D when performing benchmarking tests with Anno 2070. The game had been installed on three computers (the activation limit allowed by Ubi's DRM) but when they replaced the nVida GTX 580 with a GTX 590, the game stopped working. It demanded re-activation, which was promptly refused due to install limits.

In order to perform its usual tests, Guru3D would have needed to buy Anno 2070 seven times. It emailed Ubisoft to ask for an activation reset (which Ubi claims it can do), but has heard nothing back. Understandably, the outlet is pretty sure it won't be reviewing Ubisoft titles anymore.
*slow clap*

Penny Arcade - Exclusivity
There’s an incredibly short list of people I trust to tell me the truth about the industry, even if I don’t always want to hear it, and Ben Kuchera is on top of that list. You may already be a reader of his at Ars Technica, where he’s been in charge of their gaming coverage for… well, ever. Until today, I guess, when I hired him.

We’re bringing him on to create industry coverage you can read without holding your nose, essentially; I want a perspective, I want a Curator for the Internet’s gaming content. In a couple words, I want something less insulting and disposable.
Kuchera is best known as the polarizing figure at Ars (though I suppose anyone is polarizing to jaded gamer types). I can't say I understand PA's site exactly but this seems a... unique move. I suppose their own jadedness has finally brought them to a point where they want news reported the way they think it should be. Overall, should be good for the rest of us.

So glad that you wrote that, I felt exactly the same but was embarrassed to admit it. Not that I know anything about their history or who 'THE' writers to watch for gaming reviews are either though.

Arrested Megaupload Boss Cheated His Way To Video Game Glory, Opponents Say
Kim Dotcom, the imprisoned mastermind behind busted file-sharing site Megaupload and, bizarrely, also the top-scoring killer on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, wasn't always a showboating millionaire. He also ran a competitive video game league in the late-90s. And was by all accounts a rather sore loser.

How sore? Like, banning from his league everyone who beat him at a game of first-person shooter Quake 2. That kind of sore loser.
Back in the days of Quake 2 and the Barrysworld free server network, Dotcom used to troll the Rocket Arena 2 duel arenas as 'www.kimble.org' with an aimbot on his 6ms T1 line, raging people to the point that the entire server would clear, rather than put up with him. Then one day he was faced down and beaten by a girl-gamer on a shitty BT ISDN line - one on one, rail only. He raged so hard that he then dc'ed, looked up the player's name up on Quake.net irc and DDoSed the b0rk.co.uk irc bouncer that she used offline. Having realised he'd accomplished nothing, he then proceeded to DDoS the entire Barrysworld server array for a week, out of petty vengeance for being made to look like a twat. He was a cheating shit now, so I'd very surprised if that #1 position is legit now, either. Take a browse through the PlanetQuake archives if you wanna see the other shit he pulled, like banning the people that beat him in the leagues he admined for liga.net. 100% twat material.
Seemed topical. Also, he looks like Jim Sterling.

Average Gamers are Going To Hate BioShock Infinite's 1999 Mode
Levine used to Ubisoft's tactical shooter Rainbow Six as an example. "In Rainbow Six you died so quickly — just one bullet could kill you. There was an incredible tension to it, making me so nervous about rounding every corner."
To the more hardcore among us, Levine thinks the new mode will be a welcome return, demanding and challenging. "This mode is not going to feel like BioShock", he warned. There will be rage quits. Controllers will be thrown, even among the hardcore.
All yours, sek.

I imagine this is because after porting this won't be a feature parity with the current desktop release. My question is this: Let's say it does eventually reach feature parity with the desktop java version. What reason would there be for Mojang to keep working in Java with the performance gains of migrating to the C version? Because Notch is an obstinate douche?

Interesting, I did find the original BioShock to be a bit easy and I certainly enjoy a good* challenge in an FPS. BioShock's spiritual predecessor, System Shock 2, was a decently hard game that kept you on the edge of your seat most of the time.

*A good challenge is a game that is properly hard without resorting to BS cheap tactics like infinite enemies and grenade spamming....so Veteran CoD mode isn't something I consider a fair challenge. To experience an FPS with a properly challenging difficulty you can't get much better than the STALKER series. Very hard, but never cheap.

I totally agree. I personal LOVE Rainbow Six Vegas for that main reason. 2-3 and its a wrap, as it should be, also it took the same to kill them. I shouldn't have to dump a clip per man to kill someone, a la CoD. One to the head should do it no matter what gun you have. That's one of the issues I have with every modern shooter out there. I'd rather miss than hit a guy 10-15 times, personally.

Well, I think that's more an issue of FPS difficulty. Crank up the difficulty two levels and suddenly everyone is a bullet sponge. Not sure who has ever done it right. This feels like the case since the Goldeneye days.

Well, STALKER does it right. Harder difficulty makes ammo more scarce, health packs heal less, bullet damage is greatly increased for both the enemies and yourself. So taking a single bullet in the head = instant death for everyone. Armored enemies require armor-peircing rounds, but with the right ammo it is still one-hit-kill.

Another example is Metro 2033 Ranger Hardcore Mode (hey made by ex- STALKER guys!). They made health for the player and enemies way lower and bullet damage much higher. In reality it made the game more enjoyable than even playing on easy.

RSV2 on realistic is a very challenging game, but not by making the enemies soak up damage.

Fallout 3 is the worst offender of any game I can think of. Playing on Very Hard difficulty is just absurd. Even a normal, un-armored enemy can take a whole clip of ammo directly to the head, completely ridiculous. Didn't make the game any harder, just alot more tedious.

Hackers Brag That They're Banning Innocent Battlefield 3 Users [UPDATE 3]
Update: Some members of Artificial Aiming may be cheering on the supposed hacked bannings that were announced on their forums by user anonpbspoofer, but AA staffer Doober has posted a note, saying, "This has nothing to do with AA. The person who posted the first link is a junior member here."

Update 2: EA says: "We are aware that some Battlefield 3 players are experiencing connection issues with PunkBuster enabled servers. This problem is limited to a small subset of players on PC and will not impact players on PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360. We are actively looking into the specifics of this issue and we are confident that we will have a permanent solution in place shortly. In the meantime, if a player's connectivity has been affected, we recommend that in the interim they join servers that are not running PunkBuster. There is a filter setting for this in the multiplayer server browser."

Update 3 Tony Ray, founder of Even Balance, the company behind Punkbuster dropped me a line. He said: "This was an attack against a 3rd party admin group that uses PunkBuster to share ban information. The group of hackers/cheaters associated with the attack likes to trump up anything they can to claim some kind of victory to avert attention from the fact that we are catching their paid subscribers and banning them while they are claiming their hacks are undetectable. The 3rd party admin group should be able to easily remove the corrupted streaming from their system if they haven't already.

"It is always unfortunate when innocent players have their gameplay interrupted but it should be sorted out soon. In the mean time, there are plenty of game servers unaffected by this attack. Some players may need to branch out and try servers they don't normally play on for a while."

Update 4: An Artificial Aiming spokesperson has clarified their position on this hack to Kotaku: "I would like to add that ArtificialAiming is not affiliated with this incident. We do support this lulz."
Troubling.

Too bad it's Resident Evil, but 6 player co-op? Holy crapballs.
Whatever. Resident Evil is a great series. It's moved a little away from survival horror to more action, but still a great series.

I'm into games where I can do complicated tasks, such as walking and shooting.

I love RE series but, I wish like hell they would evolve from the tank controls. That what I loved about Metal Gear Solid 4, they updated the control to feel like a modern control scheme.

I got into about an hour in RE2 before turning it off due to the tank controls. I haven't returned since. They're STILL doing that?

Rumors: Next X-box to play blu ray discs, may not play used games and will introduce Kinect 2

But that disc detail could be far less impactful to the next generation of game consoles than the assertion I've heard from one reliable industry source that Microsoft intends to incorporate some sort of anti-used game system as part of their so-called Xbox 720.

It's not clear if that means that the system wouldn't play used games or how such a set-up would work. Obvious approaches—I'm theorizing here—like linking a copy of a game to a specific Xbox Live account could seemingly be foiled by used-game owners who would keep their system offline. My source wasn't sure how Microsoft intended to implement any anti-used game system in the new machine.

A push in any way by Microsoft against used games would likely be cheered from publishers sick of seeing retailers like GameStop crow about their revenues from the sale of used games. But it could potentially anger consumers who rely on buying cheaply-sold used games or even pass games to relatives or friends.
That better not be true.

EGM ponders how this insane rumor could come true

How would this work? There’s a few possibilities. Currently, games are starting to come with one-use codes which download a key file to your console and unlock a certain portion of the game (online multiplayer, key segments, etc.). Something like this could now be standard for every game, but it wouldn’t be the most elegant solution. Another idea is that Microsoft could encode a unique code key in every disc that’s pressed. The first time that game is run, that code it tied to your Xbox Live account, and the game will then not function when run under another account on another console.

We start to run into HUGE problems here. Will this system let people in the same household play the game under different accounts? (Of course—it’d have to.) But what about different consoles in the same house? Many households now have multiple Xbox 360s—how would this idea work for them?

Or what about taking a game to a friend’s house? How would that work under this program? Because, in theory, if you have to register the game on your home console, a friend’s console would then see it as “used”. And what about games that are no longer on sale new? There are plenty of games that come out, have limited runs, and then simply aren’t available as new copies. What do I do if I’ve missed the window in which a game could be purchased new?
I guess we'll know more as E3 approaches

Do soldiers need to do a lot of jumping on the battlefield?

(The cock suckers can do it in Call of Duty anyway...)

Yep, it's absolutely required that you jump in HALO and CoD. In fact the smart ones jump right over you so that you can't kill them and then they stab you in the back.

Of course the CoD soldiers are jealous of the HALO Spartans with rocket packs.

Modern Warfare 3 Elite maps locked to one profile on one console | Joystiq
The Call of Duty Elite DLC may be more "elite" than intended. Users on the Call of Duty forums are complaining that the DLC maps can only be played by one account per console. That means that only the person who bought it can play the maps -- not other users of the same game on the same console, unless they share a single Xbox Live profile.
Heh.

It doesn't bother me as I'm the only one using my Xboxes, but that IS stupid. Especially for families. Why should every member of the family shell out for the maps.

The console makers should abandon disc-based sales and move their sales to the internet for the next wave. Frankly, having to fish out a game disc is ridiculous.

Agreed. No more need for disc-based games (well, assuming you have a decent d/l speed).

These companies are starting to realize that people will push back - look at Netflix or SOPA. Good luck, MS. I've no doubt they'll try it, but wouldn't be surprised if they backtrack 3-6 months after launch.

The ONLY way it would work without fallout is if games were distributed digitally.

Kinect sensors being tested for use in laptops [Update: Microsoft responds] | Joystiq
Update: We've received an interesting statement from Microsoft after inquiring about seeing the prototypes ourselves: "Kinect has changed the way we think about the future of games, entertainment, education and business. We're always thinking about what is next and how we can push the boundaries of our technologies to transform how consumers interact with our products and experiences. Beyond that we don't comment on rumors or speculation." Interesting indeed.

Jesus, no. You're ridiculous.

For one, I have two consoles in my house that I occasionally switch between, not to mention my friends and I occasionally host or exchange games. But more importantly, downloading games blowsssssss.

Yesterday, I updated Battlefield 3, and had 2 GB of DLC waiting for me. 15-20 minutes later, I decided to play the game without it (Less than 50% complete). I can't imagine how long it would take for 10 and 20 GB games next gen, but I want no part of that. Hell the irony is, if I wanted to do something while waiting for those games to download I couldn't do something simple like... watch Netflix.

When given the choice, I always opt for the downloadable version. Infamous, LittleBigPlanet, Assassin's Creed II, Halo 3...all downloaded. I despise switching discs, and I don't mind waiting for something to download -- all you have to do is plan your time wisely.

But I will agree that average broadband speeds across the country really need to improve, and quickly. Otherwise, all-digital downloads will start appearing a lot less amazing.

Also, I can only imagine the infrastructure required. Envision what happens when 8 million people all decide to download the newest CoD-ish title at midnight.

Spoken like someone who has to plan ahead thanks to getting burned by Sony's abysmally slow update process.

The process now: I order a game of amazon, pick release date delivery, go to work, come home, pick the game out of the mail, go play.

My future: Either turn on the XBOX and start the game downloading before I go to work or get home, start the download, twiddle my thumbs for an hour or two.

Oh, and amazon is cheaper.

The problem in Canada isn't download speeds, but download caps. All the ISPs in Canada have them.

The other thing, like Dakar says is to time the download. Might be time for a download scheduler - I'm not on at night so my Xbox could schedule downloads to start at midnight.
