I bought a Sawtooth G4 450 with 1GB RAM, Radeon 8500 64MB, Sonnet ATA-133 card with Maxtor ATA-133 40GB and 120GB drives, DVD burner and zip for $240. It is not dual CPU capable. I've found 3 CPU upgrades in my approximate price range:

1. OWC Mercury Extreme [email protected] with 2MB L3 Cache for PowerMac G4 AGP Graphics/Sawtooth, Gigabit Ethernet, Digital Audio & Quicksilver Models. 7455 G4/1GHz Guaranteed to 1.2GHz. Plug & Play Ready Set! 3yr OWC Warranty, 30 Day 100% Money Back Guarantee. $249.00

2. Sonnet Encore/ST G4/1.2GHz Processor Upgrade W/ 2MB L3 Cache for AGP Macs. 3yr Sonnet Warranty. $249
http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Sonn...logy/SG412002M/

3. PowerLogix PowerForce47 G4/1.6GHz with 512K 1:1 L2 Cache Per Processor for PowerMac G4 AGP Graphics/Sawtooth and Gigabit Ethernet Models. 3 Year PowerLogix/OWC Warranty + 30 Day 100% Money-Back. (1.25GHz Processor running at 1.6GHz) $269.00
http://eshop.macsales.com/item/PowerLogix/PF47S1600AG/

From perusing the forum, it seems like #3, the 7447A would be best because of the power supply in my machine, and roughly equivalent speedwise. I am a bit leery of the 1.25 -> 1.6GHz overclock, but it does come with a 3 year warranty & 30 day money back guarantee.

Any thoughts and advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Dave

Speaking from experience:
Sonnet => Yes
GigaDesigns => Yes
Powerlogix => No

Shop around. Don't just stick with OWC. Newegg.com sells Sonnet. You can buy GigaDesigns direct or from any of their other resellers.

$234.00 for Sonnet 1.2 @ buy.com. They also have regular 10% off coupons (up to 15.00) and free shipping. 2MB L3 and Sonnet CPUs are bulletproof

BTW: nice score on the Powermac

I had an AGP G4/500, Radeon 8500, 1Gb ram, 2 HDs, that I wanted to upgrade also.

I went with the 1.4GHz OWC card - and I have been VERY happy with it - flawless installation, has been running great - no problems whatsoever.

Doesn't answer your question, but that was my experience, maybe it will factor into your decision-

Thanks. I placed my order:

sku: 10339021
description: Sonnet Encore/ST G4 - Processor upgrade - 1 PowerPC G4 1.2 GHz - L3 2 MB
qty: 1
unit price: $209.99
item total: $209.99
---------------------------------------------------------
sku: 89587692
description: take $25 OFF the purchase of $250 or more (Excludes Cellular, Books, and game consoles. Not compatible with Affiliate program.)
qty: 1
unit price: $0.00
item total: $0.00
---------------------------------------------------------
sku: 10323928
description: D-Link DUB H4 - 4-Port USB 2.0 Hub
qty: 1
unit price: $24.99
item total: $24.99
================================================== =======
Subtotal: $234.98
Shipping & Handling: $0.00
Tax: $17.03
TOTAL: $252.01

I get a $15 rebate on the hub; it allowed me to use the $25 off $250 coupon (the Sonnet was 234.99 before the coupon). Free shipping. The machine was already upgraded in every way but the CPU, so I figured this would probably be a better machine than a Mini, at a lower cost.

I am sure you made the correct decision. I bought Sonnet 1.2GHz too and I'm very happy with it. I should have bought the 1.4 version, but the shop couldn't offer me it. I did not only buy a new cpu, I updated my Sawtooth to a Digital Audio to have the power for an ATI 9800Pro, to be prepared for Tiger. The advantage with DA is that it can take 2xcpu.

Put it in last night. It kicks some major ass. I'm not sure which is faster, it or my MDD Dual 867.
