In addition to the Classic OS 9 system on the same partition as X, I have 9.2.2 on a separate partition. The ONLY time I use it is when I need to run DiskWarrior on the X partition, which I did last night (and received the usual improvements in speed and stability).

As soon as Alsoft releases an X version of DiskWarrior (Alsoft reports it's in the works), I'm going to get rid of this system.

Then I'll make a decision about my Classic folder.... which I haven't used in 6 months or so.

I'm curious: has anyone gotten rid of all OS 9 altogether? Is everyone holding onto Classic "just in case"? How many of you still use Classic, and what for?

I deleted mine several months ago. I do not have any applications which require OS9.

Totally gone - I don't miss it a bit. You have to let it go.

I would have to say that the only people that totally removed OS 9 are the same people that said, Im using OS X full time a year and a half ago.

I haven't had it since 10.2 was released. Still have it on backup or original install/restore discs if need be, but I've nothing that runs in OS 9 that doesn't run in OS X.

Why should i delete OS 9? It doesn't take to much space on my HD. I haven't used it for a long time but maybe I'll need it sometime for some strange and old app that i haven't thought about for a long time...

I still have Classic "just in case": in particular, for the occasional multimedia CD-ROM, which still might require Mac OS 9.

Anyway, for such sporadic needs, it's enough with a very basic "no frills" install + QuickTime (maybe it could even fit on a Zip disk)...

I wiped it off my iBook 500 b/c I needed the space on my dinky 10 GB drive. With my new 800, I haven't gotten around to removing it, but I definitely don't use it....

I had it deleted at one point, but recently added it back on. Right now there is no program that I trust enough in X for live audio recording. Spark is pretty good, but I've had a few problems, enough to keep me in OS 9 for a little while.

But when I'm not recording, I'm in OS X full time.

I don't have it currently but am thinking about adding it back on because I'm looking like I may need to use Quark again pretty soon.

Other than that, I don't need it.

when i got 10.2 (august) i just wiped my hd and started fresh...

bag that old crud. you know what's great?
not having my music pause when i hold down a menu. that's some great stuff. and being able to rip in the background.

my friend kept 9.2 (archive install) but i decided that i just didn't need that (i've also only got a 12 gig hd). i would argue with the above point that only the initial switchers don't have 9 any more. i actually know quite a few kids who don't use 9 at all. and you know what the other great part of it is? when you're installing a new app and it says "valid classic environment not detected. classic compatibility will not install. if you need classic compatibility, install classic and then re-run this installer."

i LOVE that message.

I removed it in May to free up space on my TiBook. The only thing I would have ever needed it for is the software that comes with my text books, but who uses that crap anyway?

Have I completely deleted OS 9? No.

Have I ever booted into OS 9 or used Classic on my TiBook? No.

Why haven't I deleted OS 9? Just in case.

With my luck, I would reformat and reinstall everything, and no OS 9, and then 2 days later I would be in some situation where I wanted to do something that required it and would have to install it anyway. So it is still on my hard drive to spite Murphy, of Murphy's Law.

I didn't have 9 installed on my iBook for all of 2002. Don't ever plan on having it again.

At school, I have a 9.2.2 partition dedicated to all those non-carbonized audio apps I use...

At home, 9 is just a way to boot Linux

Plenty of folks still need OS 9. Keep using it if that gets the job done. OS X and the apps will come your way eventually (well, at least pray that it does).

Nope. Still keep my old full install of 9 on the original 10G drive that came with my G4. Also still have my SCSI "emergency" boot disk/scratch disk with a bunch of rescue utilities in case the IDE channels go totally FUBAR. As long as I can boot it, I'll keep 9 around. Also have a tonne of PhotoShop plug ins that will never get Carbonized.

Yes, I still have OS9...in my CD case. I decided that I wouldn't be needing it for what I do (email, surfing the web, word processing). So when I did a clean install of 10.2 a few months back, I left out OS9. And like you said, I'm waiting for DiskWarrior for OSX to come out, that's the only thing I need.

I've purchased 3 new Macs for myself since August of last year, and a new PowerBook G4 1 GHz coming tomorrow. When I get them I reformat the HD with Mac OS X 10.2 and thats it. (Well, X11, but... )

i've got an os 9 box. the old 7600. it was running os x server until i got the b/w G3. now that's running server - and no 9. the 7600 runs the scanner (frikkin' microtek) and card reader (frikkin' Dane-Elec). but mostly it's turned off (the digi-still camera's got a power supply). yet it still lives on the network.

otherwise, i only need os 9 to install final cut pro 1 (to enable the upgrade to 3 in os x - bad apple). i keep it on a firewire drive and the iBook - just in case. one never knows what the road will bring...

the only time i see 9 is under norton/diskwarrior.

Why keep it? You never know when you'll need it.

Further, I have two words. Stategic Conquest. Great old game that is addictive as hell and has no OSX version.

I use it via a disk image stored on my 2nd HD, just in case. Since its a disk image, it doesn't seem like a real OS install to me, just another file, and since I have the room....

Still have it--use it for a couple of old games, a few straggling apps. As HD space gets bigger there is less and less reason to strip it out.

OS CLASSIC is a dead OS...little support and NO UPGRADES,,,,simple as an 68k upgrade in days past...do not dwell on unsupported and no longer developed OS's..make the leap...you will not miss alot...
Drop partitionining unless for Linux and Yellowdog....
Embrace the future and forget the past....
just one opinion...
... let it go....let it become only a fond memory...
I use to hang with it for gaming....let the game developers catch-up instead...

Still using it. Most of my music applications run on OS 9 only, so I have no other choice.

Well, I deleted it on my sisters iMac. However, I haven't deleted on my own system yet. I have used it in months and months and never boot into 9 anymore...I just can't bring my self to to it

Still has it. Used it for a few hours this weekend because toast works better under OS 9 and Finder still have some flaws when it comes to browsing cd/dvd's. I still think OS 9 has it charm, but I only use in special cases, every 2 month or less.

first thing i did when i got my 1gig powerbook?

dvd in, hold down C, format the disk and install 10.2 only.

but then i'm a recent switcher (late november). os9 is dead and buried as far as i'm conserned. all i know is that i went from the 'as shiped' disk usage of 4.77GB to 1.4GB of used space. damm apple must pile some shareware and stuff on!

You mean this snood?

I keep OS 9 around for the occasional classic game (of which I have plenty).

At work I use it for Outlook and Quark.
