As a result of a bad trackpad in my Pismo, I'm currently using Links for
my webbrowsing. I must say it's insanely full-featured. It does everthing
necessary for browsing the forums, including cookies and pull-down menues,
except for pictures. What a freaking great program.

They laughed at my Mac, it had no CLI. They laughed at Linux, it had no GUI. I installed MacOS X, and shut them up.

There's also a version of links with graphics. Probably will run on OS X via XDarwin, though I'm not sure.

Why do you have to use a text-only browser because your trackpad is bad...?

I find links to be much much user-friendly than lynx (and it seems to handle rows and columns in a much nicer manner).

Now, I've been thinking. Links does not display images, but wouldn't it be possible to choose a picture on a webpage and have it launch Preview to show the picture? I saw that it has an "Association" feature. I tried adding a new one and typed:

Label: JPEG
Content-Type(s): image/jpeg
Program ('%' is replaced with file name): open -a Preview %
[OK]

But that didn't seem to work. Can someone help me out here?

EDIT: I know I can make links download the image to my home directory.

you can get by in IE most of the time without using the mouse/trackpad. That's why I use it. Keyboard control is pretty good. The tab key works nicely, as well as the ability to type the first few letters of a link on the page and have it be selected for you. Also option-tab jumps between text fields.

Press ESC to bring up the menu. I've found turning on "Color" under Setup>Terminal Options is nice, as is "number links" under HTML Options.
You can then instantly follow links by typing the number, without moving the cursor down to it.

I've enjoyed surfing with this for the last couple days. The speed that I can navigate through sites and forums makes me feel more productive.

One of the features that I love about links is mouse support. Obviously this isn't much use to nonhuman at the moment but it is cool to be able to click on links and buttons in its text based dialogs. Mouse support doesn't work in OS X because OS X doesn't support it. It looks much nicer in a term that supports line drawing too (see screenshot of PuTTY on WinXP, click for bigger one)

It works in text mode but has anyone got it working in X11 mode?

I guess fink doesn't have the X11 version yet. (2.x) I'll see if the 2.x version works...

Does anyone know how to enter a relative link in links? In lynx, If I go to url www.localhost.com/cars/servers, and then type 'g' for the Go option, it prefills the url with the existing one so I can easily change it to www.localhost.com/cars/users by just deleting 'servers' and typing 'users'. In links, the whole field is blank and I must retype the entire URL. VERY annoying.

OK, I feel really stupid. I am posting this from Links but I cannot seem to figure out how to turn on color or any other options. I can go to the Terminal options menu and select the color option but how do I turn it on or off? Nothing I seem to do works. Thanks for your help.

mattparker,
press the ESC key. You will get a menu system in the terminal window with which you'll find "terminal options" etc.

oops, just reread your post.
In the "terminal options" thing, move your cursor to the options you want and press the spacebar. That will give select them.

Links *is* "Freakin Awesome" (with the little jumping guy) for checking these web forums. It really speeds things up when browsing casually among topics. And thanks for the numbered links tip. Now things are even better!
