There is a new version of the iPod software out adding functions to the Mini and Original Click Wheel.

Here are the details :-

Whats New in iPod
New Updates for iPod mini
-Compatibility with iTunes 4.7 and the iTunes Music Store
-Create multiple On-The-Go playlists
-Shuffle and play song library with one click
-Delete songs from On-The-Go playlists
-Select reading playback speed for audiobooks
-Hear Click Wheel clicker through headphones
Sync and go with improved disconnect performance

New Updates for Click Wheel iPods
-Compatibility with iTunes 4.7 and the iTunes Music Store
-Improved USB 2.0 connectivity

One new thing I notice with my minis is that you can now operate the iPod mini while it is in the dock and connect to the computer, you can even turn it off in the dock and you get the big battery charging indicator that you see when connected to the charger.

Yes the iPod photo is a click wheel but it is not an original click wheel and this update is not for you.

You already have all the features listed, no need to update.

Finally. I've been waiting for the features in the 4G ipods to finally be able to be used on my 3G. Nice.

I can't believe it when I saw this on my Software Update. Never expected Apple will give out additional functionality for the mini.

Good work, Apple!

Now that the mini's have been brought up to spec with the latest gen iPod's, I might get myself one for xmas! The older spec was what was kinda holding me back ... waiting for the next gen.

But ... it seems there's one improvement (from 3rd gen to 4th gen) that the update doesn't add to the mini's, and that is the longer battery life. Unless I am mistaken, I remember someone from Apple stating that the increase in battery life of the 4th gen iPods was due to more efficient software, and not different batteries.

If that is the case, why doesn't this update increase the battery life of the mini? Hmmm .... do I smell a fish?

8minute, from what I remember, the 4th gen extended battery life is due to hardware (Apple said they redesign the circuit board) and not because of software.

so... basically, not a whole lot for my 4G click wheel? I don't use USB, and I hadn't been having any problems with using iTunes...

It's been a blessing so far as had had many problems lately with my 4G iPod. Plus, I like the extra functions for the Mini. Now I can have more than one on-the-go playlists at the gym. The audiobook feature is also good to have.

Turnpike, you already have all the latest features. We mini owners were behind.

I was also beginning to fear Apple would never bring these features to the mini - but hooray - for they have after all.

I particularly like the Shuffle Songs menu item and option to only hear the menu clicks through my headphones.

Also: I notice that the lengthy song titles now scroll differently. I don't think they will use as much battery power now, but that is highly speculative.

I think the confusion with the 3G/4G battery difference is that they use similar capacity batteries, and that the improvement is a more efficient circuitboard. So, more efficient bettery handling, but still hardware.

All I know is I was having kernel panics with it before when I tried to copy any song from my library on 4.7 and now, it moved everything over just fine.
The Mini update was a nice touch as well.

Not sure about that. I just got a 40G 4g on Saturday and it has 3.0.1 on it. (I have not downloaded the upgrade) This is reporting 3.0.2, so there may be some differences.

I'm just glad that my mini doesn't reset itself every time it's plugged in or unplugged anymore. It's not listed in the improvements, but my file transfer speeds went up as well, the 200MB work file I copy over every night took 20 seconds less to copy after I updated.

I think this covers the first bit :-

"Sync and go with improved disconnect performance"

I too have seen a transfer speed improvement.

After downloading the updater, I just tried plugging in my iPod (3G) and it says I have the most current version. After reading the updater specs, I see that it only gives the new 4G functionality to the mini's? Is this updater useless for the 3G? I was getting all excited...

Sucks but yeah, I think Apple only updates new models and throws the old model updates to the wind. I don't mind though, I still like my 3rd gen compared to the 4th gens, something about the all white iPod still gets the best of me.
NOW YOU SEE ME! 2.4 MBP and 2.0 MBP (running ubuntu)

I guess it was just wishful thinking on my part that the software update would increase battery life!
