I have an old firewire external drive. 40GB Maxtor External Storage, model FWRA040PRX01
I have taken the enclosure apart and the orginal drive inside is a Maxtor (DiamondMax VL 40 5400 rpm - 40.9 GB AT Disk drive.
What I would like to do is replace the 40GB drive with one that is 260 or 320 GB. I was wondering if the firewire brige would recongnize a larger drive and if so what size would the enclosure recongnize?

I suspect that you controller is ATA6, so any ATA drive will work fine. That means your biggest option is a seagate 750GB, to my knowledge. I am sure a 400 GB will work .9 seagate will work.

Depends on the chipset used in the enclosure... you might run into the 137GB limit.
