What's so special about that screenshot? Everyone who bought Mac OS X has 4K78.

I agree. If you plan on installing this 'update', backup your files first, if you can.

Hmm.. I wonder what's going to happen when I install an update like this that includes SSH even though I already have SSH installed that I compiled manually. Anybody in the same boat?
Also, am I the only one here perplexed that if this update is real... why it's being distributed as a file? There is this thing in the Preferences called "Software Update" after all.

I dunno, I heard on Wincent that 4k78 and retail were different for some reason, and since I bought mine at the store, it confused me. I guess the wincent board was BS.

I've got 10.0.1 installed. It is build 4L5. Here's a list of what I've noticed:
1. Overall system smoothness is increase. It's not quiet OS9 yet, but that's what more updates are for.
2. The update includes the new Software Update control panel. It _doesn't_ locate any new updates. I tried it, because Apple had a habit on OS-9 of not actually shipping an update via SWU until you update SWU. Not this time.
3. Window resizing in Terminal.app is definately faster (I only mention Terminal.app because I use it daily to connect to my Sun machines upstairs), although I can't see any major difference in the resizing speed of any other windows.
Specifically, LIST VIEW in Finder is still a LOT slower then anything else. This has to be a bug, because there is no way that list view is a more complex redraw then column view (and column view is faster).
4. Omni, IE, QT, etc, etc, all seem the same.
Overall.. the update seems worth the hassle, but the timid should wait for Apple to officially release it before they give it a whirl. Unsanctioned updates land you in a heap of trouble as far as support goes.
At any rate, OS X totally owns kids. OS 9 did have more window speed, app launching speed, etc, etc, but Apple _will_ fix all of these things. In the meantime, I've _never_ been able to multitask like I have in OS X, and this means everything to me, because I'm a very busy programmer who's jumping from web to code to terminal windows all day and can't stand any waiting.
For everyone who bitches about the redraw speeds and such... it's important to point out that _while_ one Window is redrawing, other windows are totally responsive and ready to go. The system is like this all over the place, and really does demonstrate a good threading model and kernel implementation. So, when you encounter a slow down, do something else for a minute. The OS can handle it!
Later,
D

I don't want to over state this, but the update did wonders for my DP 450 G4. It is now totally usable as an everyday OS for me. It is no longer sluggish and Classic is a LOT faster now. I just did some Photoshop stuff and I swear Photoshop runs faster now in classic than OS 9.1.
This is weird, I don't know how many bugs were fixed with this update but the one thing it did do is optimize the hell out of it, to me anyway.
It will be interesting to read how the real programmers and experts react to this update.
I'm very happy with it and I thank the person who bought this to our attention today. I wonder if Apple is pissed about this?
Although IE is still the same build it seems more responsive now. I wonder just what the hell Apple did to optimize it like this...any chance some of you can discover any removal of debug code or something with this update?

Now, if I could only use my Brother Laser and my Epson Photo EX I'd be ready to commit to OS X full time now. Unless of course I discover more bugs or kernel panics

I'll second that. Downloading a file no longer prevents you from working in IE.

I was at one of the big "release parties" and the Apple employee giving the OS X demo at about 10PM before the actual boxes ended up in our hands told us about the update. He said Apple's would have firmware updates and a 10.0.1 updater on the website on Saturday. Of course, the firmware updates were there, but not the updater. I am guessing there was some last-minute fix they wanted to get in before making it available. Either that or they were trying to shrink the download, perhaps find out any early problems users were having that they could add to the updater, etc, etc. Since the system has been out for less than a week, I wouldn't worry too much about it. I'm sure it will show up very soon, esp. since an Apple employee was authorized to tell us at the demo to expect it right away.

Looks like they added support for more USB and SCSI drives.
Did iTunes have visuals before?
Finder menus have a few new options. Did folder list view have options for icon size/etc. before? Oh and there's show status bar in folders, was that there before?
Speed is a tiny bit snappier for me.
Broke my Sherlock .

OS X on a Rev. A iBook w/288MB- Day 5
I just installed the update after thinking it over for a while. I am backed up and I want more speed. I installed it and all went well, except it didn't restart on it's own. I restarted manually after it seemed to stop with the installer saying ..will restart in 1 second.. It zipped through most of the install, but took more than 10 minutes "optimizing". After a restart, "About This Mac" said I had build 4L5.
While this update didn't knock my socks off, it was easily an increase in speed. Though others said, "apps don't launch any faster", for me that is not the case. A lot faster, no, but faster for me. General speed is faster as well, menus snap faster, the dock pops up quicker, switching screens is quicker, scrolling in applications, stuff like that. One odd thing was that in Classic, apps really were a lot more reponsive for me, so even if I were just running Classic apps, I feel they run faster w/running OS X. I don't have any benchmarks, but this is based on using just OS X since Saturday AM.
I haven't used SSH yet, but I use it a few times a week, another reason I updated. Classic may start faster, but it was always acceptable for me, so I didn't really notice a drastic difference. My brightness, mute and sound controls do not give feedback as they are adjusted, but they work. Actually the brightness doesn't seem to be working as I write this.
Overall that really laggy feeling has diminished and OS X just became much more useable for me. Thanks to those that put it up on their iDisk!
FWIW, I didn't do a clean install of OS X on Saturday, and I had been contemplating doing a complete reinstall, wiping everything off my iBook and starting from scratch. This was because I had read that people who had simply installed OS X over 9.1 had more speed complaints than those that did a complete clean install. I don't know if that "optimize" part of the update did anything to address that issue, but I have no plans to reinstall now. I may have been slower than others to begin with and this update feels a lot faster to me. I can't say for sure.
Final notes: I did the firmware upgradelast Friday, I had the memory tests off in the Memory Control Panel. I have a 256MB DIMM (2-2-2s) that worked fine, not problems at all.
Oh,JB72, iTunes had visuals before, for me anyway.

Just that the Carbon version does not have support for full screen.

Hmmm. apart from adding SSH this update didn't seem to do much (as far as I can tell) on my G3 (pismo). Performance is not noticeably different (although it's seemed fine to me from the start) .It seems G4 users are more commonly seeing speed increases. I'll try it on a G4 later. Any G3 users seeing marked speed gains? I'm thinking this update did minor things and got rid of some bugs, but did nothing major to enhance speed...
oh - caution - it broke my Sherlock as well.

I installed the update and it seems that it is a little faster. I've got a pismo as well. Sherlock works for me. I don't know for sure because it always seemed ok for me to begin with.

.pax is for package archives. From apple's page:
The following steps demonstrate how to archive your package using pax.
1.From a shell window in the Terminal application, move to the directory that contains your package. For example:
% cd /Users/admin/Packages
Use the pax command to create an archive of the package. For example:
% pax -wf Hello.pkg.pax Hello.pkg
The w option tells pax to write an archive. The f option names the file which will contain the archive.
2.When the pax command completes, you will see a file named Hello.pkg.pax. This archive can be compressed (or not) and can be posted to the Web
(for example) for downloading, or distributed by other means.
3.Test opening the archive by using Aladdin StuffIt Expander, or another utility of your choice. StuffIt Expander can be found in
/Applications/Utilities/Aladdin.
.bom seams to be an older package archiver, for the PB.
Creating a Package for Earlier Releases of Mac OS X
If you need to create a package that users can install on Mac OS X release 1.0, Public Beta, and earlier, turn on the "Create old BOM format" option. If
you need to create a package that uses can install on Mac OS X release 1.0 and later, turn off that option.
Note that packages that use the old BOM format are unlikely to be compatible with future versions of Mac OS X.

Installed on original iBook:
Sherlock is fine.
Things seem snappier, though overall speed is just as fast (note I did not say slow) as it was before. Maybe a bit better.
Mail has new keychain integration. It's good to see the keychain starting to come to fruition.
I don't know. Does anybody have any specific questions? It just seems to be a genuine update: some glitches fixed, most likely, and a couple new features and optimizations. All improve the user experience when taken together, but apart they are pretty minor.
PS - What's with all the "optimizing System Performance" talk in all the installers? This is by far the longest part, yet I don't know what it is doing. Any ideas?

Looks like the following quote is best report, and I'm wondering if the update might take more advantage of Dual processors, or of ye olde 'velocity engine'. I don't know much about such things, but can future posts here please mention your specs, thusly:
-lucy
pismo G3 400
576 MB RAM
(I'm waiting for Apple to release it, b/c X works fine for me for now...)
Thanks all

What do you mean by new integration? In 4K78 the keychain stores all my Mail passwords.
Keychain is actually quite nice in Mac OS X since it just works transparently in the background.
The first time I opened the app I was surprised to see it loaded with passwords already.

Sweet.
I hadn't ever checked keychain since I'd never been asked to put things there. I'm not sure if this is a good move on Apple's part (keeping passwords like cookies but NEVER asking me), but it is cool for me, since I'm no top secret CIA-type user.
I noted it because Mail asked me if it could use keychain, whereas it had not before. Maybe my first ponderance is moot?

I have a dual 450 and I just installed the update. I must say that it made a LARGE improvement in classic performance as well as small gains every where else. Start up time is also much better now too. This is what Apple should have shipped as the final.

One thing I think alot of people would like to know (at least those of use with Dual CPU G4's) is does the new update fix the PPP Connect problem? Anyone trying to stay connected with PPP Connect for more than five seconds knows what I am talking about.

Sherlock gave me an error the first time I launched it after the update. However, the next time I launched Sherlock it was fine. Looks like it's still doing okay. Try re-launching it if you are having problems.

You still have to log in anyway (or could set the Mac to )
BTW OmniWeb also stores passwords in the Keychain and I kind of like it that way.

Looks like this update adds the ability for Terminal to show the term size value when re-sizing. I don't think this was there before, because I specifically looked for it. Now it says "80x24" in the titlebar when re-sizing. Can anyone with the pre 10.0.1 update confirm if this is there and I am imagining things, or if this was actually added by the update?
Also where did that list (posted previously on this thread) of updated files come from? I couldn't find an Installer log anywhere. Where is it?

Nope. Terminal has always done that. It's an option in the app preferences or views section of the inspector somewhere.

I second this question! And I also assure you the problem is by no means confined to dual G4 users, as this single 350Mhz G4 user will attest.
The PPP bug is the single biggest annoyance in this young OS for me, really the only thing that keeps me from being in it full-time. If this update helps, I'm all over it.
