I cant imagine Jacob being a new character. I really believe that jacob is christian, simply because he has been in the show since the first or second show.
but who knows... i guess we will find out in next week.

Okay - so Locke is clearly not Locke, but the guy at the beginning who wanted to kill Jacob. I'm guessing they are both Gods and they can't kill each other, so each needs an intermediary to do the dead.
I guess Juliet blew up the whole... although I don't like waiting till next season to see what that even means.

I hope this isn't the end of Jacob. He seemed like a pretty awesome guy.... which is a rarity for the show...

So the guy with Jacob on the island when we see the old ship (is it the Black Rock?) is his nemesis? God vs. the Devil? Jacob was wearing white, other guy wearing black, good vs evil?

I feel compelled to note the lack of activity in this thread the past few weeks, and speculate as to its correlation with viewer apathy towards the show at this point.

There's no apathy from me, I still enjoy the show. I'll be honest in saying (and I think I've already said it) that I'm glad we have an ending date.
A few more answers last night, although the Jacob scenes (where he has seemingly touched all the Losties' lives) felt like they were shoehorned in though.

The disagreement over whether or not to bomb the Swan seemed much more forced. Mostly thanks to Juliet going all estrogen over it.

I'm still interested in the show, but there hasn't been that much to discuss just recently. Last night's was the first that really revealed any pertinent information, and even that was so vague that it feels a little silly discussing a lot of it.
One thing I thought was interesting is that my brother has said for quite a while that he thought the smoke monster, Cerberus, was working together with another creature that can become dead people, who he calls Anubis. Looks like he was on the right track. I'm not convinced anymore that all the dead people are the same thing, though. Is the Charlie that's haunting Hurley supposed to be the same as Faux Locke? Is Christian, even though he seems to be Jacob's mouthpiece? It seems like maybe there are real ghosts and hijacked ghosts.
Also, I'm trying to figure out who's on which side. Obviously Anubis and Jacob are enemies. It seems like Jacob hates Ben for some reason ("What about you?"). That made me think maybe Jacob was supporting Widmore, but Jacob seems to be a believer in free will and Widmore seems to buy into Hawking's fatalism.
BTW, Richard's answer to the question was "He who protects us all." So I guess they're in trouble now.

Yeah, I'm a little irritated Jacob basically asked to be killed by purposely being a dick to Ben. And I will stab someone if its because he "needed to die".

Jacob seems to have similar powers to Anubis (at least he was able to make Richard immortal), so he might not be as dead as you or I might be if we were stabbed and thrown into a fire.

But it seems Jacob arranged the return to the past. That could be his ace in the hole. If he undoes everything that happened, he won't be dead.

Pretty good stuff this week, seeing the black rock was unexpected but a great scene nonetheless.
After seeing this episode with Bernard/Rose i'm going on record to say that they are the "adam/eve" in the cave.

Here's my prediction - Jacob's comment about "they're coming" is actually in reference to Jack, Kate, and the rest as the nuclear explosion, for who knows what explanation, throws them back to the present.

just caught up with tivo... wtf, lost.
If they're going to do the epic battle of good vs evil gods, and people fighting to prove themselves, then this is little more than the purgatory we all guessed season one, that they emphatically denied.
I can't wait to see Ben's face when he walks out of the cave with Not!Locke to see Locke's body. It means that Ben's aparition of his daughter telling him to do what Locke said, was just Anubis/whoever roleplaying again. Which means Anubis has been telling him to do lots of bad things over the years.
How did the others heal littleBen?

Gawt dang you're a wizard.
I really don't have much to say about the show. It is what it is and I'll stick with it to see where it goes. Curious to see what BS they concoct for Richard. My main beef is with ABC. Last night was my first exposure to broadcast television in quite some time. Have commercial breaks always come this fast and furious? I'll gladly pay apple $3 to avoid the jarring effects of local car commercials on my brain.

Yeah, I don't watch network tv either, and I gotta say, seeing the same promo for ABC shows 50x is a ****ing drag.

Yeah, so we're not going to get any real answers until this thing ends. Might as well just sit back and watch each episode in silence without trying to dissect it.
And yes, The Onion's video was littered with hilarious truths.

Great episodes last night.
I'm going to put spoiler tags on for now, but I'm under the impression that since the episode has already aired we don't need them?
So many questions which I hope will be answered and not left hanging.
So now instead of flashbacks and flashforwards we have the regular timeline and the after-the-bomb-timeline?
I was shocked to see the entire island underwater and then see Kate in the tree on the island.
I'm still wondering what the after-the-bomb-timeline is going to bring to the show. It'll suck if in the final season they introduce that just to give us a warm fuzzy feeling inside and let us see "what if".
So Jacob's enemy (name?) is the smoke monster?! What's with the mechanical noise when it's around?
What's with the temple others?
I am under the impression that he cut his hand to test if the muddy water would heal him or not? I assume that if the water is clear it has amazing healing properties?
Is Sayid Sayid or Jacob?
Where's Claire?

I don't think anyone disagrees with you.
I think the biggest a-ha! moment of the episode for me was finding out what the circle of ash around Jacob's shack was.

I have a feeling there's something very real going on with the after-the-bomb timeline that's going to meet up with the island timeline, given Juliet's last (post-last?) words: "It worked."
Incidentally, I had always figured the circle of ash was either keeping Jacob in or keeping something Jacob feared out (that's the standard TV-occult use for circles of powder), and decided it was the latter last season when the circle was broken and the shack was destroyed.

Alternate reality. Let's call one "Island Time" and the other "Real Time". Man, I sure wasn't expecting that. Once I saw Jack back on the plane, I was figuring we'd see what the lives of the crashers would have been - probably worse off, with the end story being that they shouldn't have tried to change it and that they were better off on the Island.
I was guessing that Christian was the smoke monster/the man in the black shirt. And just as the smoke monster assumed the identity of Christian, the dead body on the first plane crash, he assumed Locke's identity on the second crash.
[edit/add]: I think the smoke monster can only take the form of dead people.

Claire is in LA. Remember, she was in the cab when Kate jacked the cab trying to escape. I assume that she was on the same plane with everyone else and we just never saw her.

He's talking about on the island, not the parallel reality.
I can see this is going to be a "fun" season for post episode discussion.

There's one snag in the theory that the monster can only become the dead: Something appeared to Locke as Walt, who we saw afterward was very much alive.

What makes this knowledge so fun is that, if the smoke monster couldn't harm Jacob, why was he keeping him away from the shack?

We only know he couldn't directly kill Jacob. We know he could at the very least tear the hell out of Jacob's shack, and it seems like Jacob suspected he was looking for a way to kill him, judging by his lack of surprise when Ben actually did it.

Not criticizing you, but by that logic, smokes could have killed Jacob much the same way he killed Bram.
Irritatingly, it seems like Jacob let himself die.
