I have a relative who owns an early iBook running OS 9. He's considering subscribing to Verizon's DSL service. I know that this is a no-brainer with OS X but upgrading his current machine really isn't an option.

Question: Verizon's website only mentions OS X under their system requirements. Is is possible to get online with Verizon under OS 9 as well? I've searched the forums and found some info about needing MacPoET with Verizon but these posts are two years old now. Is Verizon still compatible with OS 9 this way? Is PPoE still the needed protocol (which is not ideal under OS 9)? Thanks.

They might say this because they don't want to license MacPoET or EnterNet for the OS 9 users. OS X has PPPoE functionality built-in, whereas OS 9 needs a third party program to do this. If he can get ahold of MacPoET or EnterNet he should be able to connect just fine. Better yet, get a router and he won't need to deal with PPPoE at all (just set the router to connect via PPPoE.)

When I first got Verizon DSL it was connected via my 7200/90 running 8.6. If you get the self install kit it will include a CD with a program that basically walks you through everything.

I've since upgraded to a router that takes care of everything for me though.

(And yes, the 7200/90 is still chugging along!)

Ask if they even use PPoE first. I have Verizon DSL, and it's just generic DHCP. My router just gets an IP, then dishes them out to my computers. I've even had my old IIfx on the 'net
