This can't be good for the receiver.

Every AV or computer cabinet I've ever owned has immediately gotten my boot through the back panel so I could access the cables.

I'm not entirely sure how that's relevant. Are you saying the hole in the back is large enough to admit a cat even if the front where enclosed? If so, perhaps you should be putting smaller holes in the back so as to admit cables but not cats.

Provide something even warmer than the top of the receiver for the cat to lie on.

Find old vcr on craigslist.
Stack receiver on old vcr so not enough room for cat.

Or, cardboard box you can put dvds in.

Think of it as an ex-back panel.

Gotcha. I guess, then, that you need to evaluate your priorities: easy access to cables for you, or easy access to your receiver for your cat.

Also, Andi's idea sounds pretty good.

Well, to be fair, I murdered the back panel in like, 1998. He didn't figure this out until today.

Andi's idea is definitely the front runner.

Especially if you get one of the really old ones that has a top loader. It would add extra style and give you that extra inch or two of cat blocking ability.

This is that cat who liked a lamp so much it started smoking?

You need to get it one of those rocks for lizards so they can keep warm.

Oooh... I like those, but I'd have to put them on top and that would cover the vents.

My cats may be trying to tell me something. My other one has started sneaking into the garage and sets up shop on the radiator pipe access panel.

I wouldn't mind so much if:

A) It wasn't so f-ing filthy.
B) I'll forget she's in there and she'll get flattened.

Maybe put a little dog urine in a jar in there so the cat stays away?

How do you get it? Especially if you don't have a dog?

Break about 20 lightbulbs in a large plastic tub. Paint the top of the receiver with a good thick coat of rubber cement, turn it upside down and dip the top into the tub of broken glass 5 or 6 times. Let it dry for about 24 hours and put it back in your entertainment center.

My sig is 1 pixel too big.

But before you put it back in your entertainment center pour our dog urine over the new surface.

Dog urine? Hmm. Never heard of that being used as a cat repellent. Possibly its a collection issue. Some zoos and safari parks sell lion dung which will repel cats quite well.
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

Train her to plug and unplug RCA and HDMI cables. In this economy, everyone and their cat must work or be darwinized.

Vacuum cleaner, daily. Kitty will always look for a warm place to sleep, so if the receiver is on, that's where Kitty will settle.

A friend has put a wire stacking shelf over some of his equipment, which seems to keep his cats from sleeping ON the hardware, but I'm thinking this will only be a short term fix, until his cats figure out how to get under the shelf and knock it off the cabinet.

The problem isn't really the heat build-up from the cat, its usually the fur that gets into the vents. I had a digital set top box that one of my long-haired cats used to sleep on (she had fur almost like a chinchilla) and I when it failed I took the lid off and found half a brick of cat hair in it.
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

I've nailed him in the ass twice now with a squirt of dust-off.

I'm enjoying this far too much.

Have you tried a low voltage electrified fence around your equipment?
Actually, that may cause interference.

How about a cat repellent?

I actually have. There's this thing called a "Scat-Mat" which zaps you with a 9-volt if you touch it. It absolutely works, but it's ugly.

Regardless, he doesn't launch off the back of the couch into the rafters anymore.

you could also fill the space with tin foil, or sticky tape. Apparently cats hate the feel of their paws on that stuff.

I originally liked the idea, but he would smear the dust all over the walls on the way down. Hundreds of filthy little paw prints.

Also, his favorite place to come down was in a room with an oft-closed door, so that was a disaster waiting to happen.

The final straw though was his rolling. He likes to roll. He likes to roll on a three inch wide room divider, which I guess he knows what he's doing, but that seemed like unnecessary risk.

Nice cat though. Cat personalities are pretty special - "Oh, you don't want me to walk in the wet paint and then all over your sofa? Sorry. Here, I'll let you rub my belly."

He really is a great cat. He has only three issues.

1) Sitting on my receiver.
2) "Asking" me for nom-noms the second my foot hits the floor in the morning.
3) Loses total control of his claws when happy. Snik... right in the tendon.

A metal/plastic mesh box would work (since cardboard would cover the vents).
Or a motion-sensing air sprayer. I use them to scare the beast away from various things in the house.

So are you chasing the cat with your vacuum, or are you cleaning the insides of the receiver with it. Either one will mess with Kitty, but the later will be less likely to wind you up with an unpleasant surprise in your slippers one morning..l

Canned air.

Not sure he knows it's me. I get him square in that 4x4 tuchus and he squirts out the other side like a watermelon seed.

I love this image, and yet despise the same type of scene with humans in the 'Fat' post elsewhere on this forum. Maybe because mice are heathy, natural fare for cats, donuts not so much for humans? How many bites per mouse? Watch Garfield roll down the street blissing out on protein.

But do cats usually fill their mice with chocolate, deep fry them, and sprinkle them with powdered sugar?

No but that might just be down to their lack of opposable thumbs. They would also probably prefer cream over chocolate and might also forgo the sugar since they can't taste sweet.

My cat has thumbs. But so far he only uses them for opening cupboards, not filling mice with delicious chocolate.
