I was wondering if anyone with a PB17 has had any experiences with those "Wildeepz" screen cushion from Radtech?

http://www.radtech.us/Products/Wildeepz.aspx

I am considering to buy those - maybe in conjunction with their ScreensavRz - so my mind will be at complete rest when transporting the machine.

But:

Are they any good?
Do they look good on the beautiful PB17?
Will those cushions leave any marks if I decide to take them off again?

At the moment I am using that foam cover that came from Apple to protect the screen when the lid is closed - do you think that its enough when being transported (in a sleeve inside a bag)?

Thanks for your comments!

I've seen pictures of 17" being crooked when closed and this product makes it look ten times better when closed, not to mention it'll stop the jostling a little (if you PB jostle's). I don't know if they leave any marks when removed, but why would you remove them?

I think I'm definitely going to have to order a set of these. It's always bothered me that there was a gap when I closed my 15", and that when you pick up the computer you can feel the display hitting the chassis. This will definitely make me less paranoid when transporting this lovely machine.

I don't imagine that they'd leave much of a mark when removed. RadTech makes some really great products and I'm sure they'd take this into consideration when designing the 'Wildeepz'.

Thanks for the link!

thanks guys! I think I'll give them a shot then; I'll let you know how good they actually are.

irez: I didn't want to exclude the possibility of removing them in case my second question ("would it look good on the PB?") would be negatively answered by myself ;-)

I have a set on my 15" and I love um. They make the closed book feel much more solid. I can't say that they make it any more attractive, but you get used to them beign there really fast. It's definitely a fair trade off for keeping your screen blemish free and making your PB much easier to travel with. I wouldn't think of being truly mobile without them.

So these keep the screen far enough from the keyboard to not warrant a ScreensavRz?

Well I have one of those too actually. I got it b/c after purchasing a $2000+ laptop I figured that I mise well not be cheap. Pluss they look cool and you always have a soft cloth to whipe your LCD and pretty much the whole notebook down with. That and I was already placing an order I would recomend both if you can swing it!

Too bad they don't have a dome like shape, they would look much cooler, however they do a great job protecting your Powerbook. My 17" has one on each top corner. I just place them by eye, no problemo. They can be peeled off and repositioned easily.

I'll try to snap a picture with a credit card next to it to compare thickness when I get home. I believe there are two sizes. One for the 12 and 17" and one for the 15". Anyway I think the 15" ones are a bit thinner. Mine can't be much more than a mm thick if that.

Scroll down to about the fourth row of images here to see some great pics of these overpriced rubber pads in use:

http://homepage.mac.com/bhardy3/PhotoAlbum34.html

And yeah, like I said, they're WAY overpriced if you ask me.

If you think they're way overpriced, you should buy some cheaper ones elsewhere.

As for the ScreensavRz, personally I wouldn't bother if you have the Wildeepz on. You don't need it for wiping down the LCD and case, you can use their PowerSleevz for that. They're also great for keeping your PowerBook scratch free.

BTW, I'm embarassed even typing those product names out... couldn't they come up with a normal naming scheme?

OK, I think I will. $15 for four little rubber pads is too GD much. Where do you recommend I get them?

Maybe you could find something at Home Depot and/or and arts and crafts store?

Hmm, I like their screen saver clothes and cases, so I went ahead and ordered a set for my PB17.

I have to agree...I bought them for my TiBook and I think I'm still in shock that I voluntarily paid this much for a few tiny little rubber/silicone dots. The profit margin on these things must be incredible...wish I had that margin in my sales business!

Let me tell you why you want those little expensive things - they are worth every penny. I have a PB 17" - first week I had it I was traveling overseas. I opened my PB up on the plane to discover the edges of the palmrest and screen bezel had rubbed against each other causing black rub marks to appear. This only got work over the next few weeks until there were dime sized scuffs on the aformentioned edges.

When I got back to the states I took it into the Apple Store in town - their "Genius" told me that was normal wear and tear. I explained that the 15" has spacers on the outer edges to avoid this but the 17" only has the spacers in the middle.

He said there was nothing he could do. About a week after that I noticed a small dark patch on my screen up in the menu bar. I took it back in to the same "Genius." He sent my PB out for the screen issue and came back with both the palmrest area and screen bezel replaced!

I purchased WildEeps at that time and have experienced no more rub issues. Sure, you can try to find something at Home Despot but I think WildEeeps are worth every penny - they're clear, small and just plain work.
Wherever you go... there you are.

here's a little update: I was first a little hesitant to buy thouse wildeepz cushions - not so much because I thought they were too expensive - but simply because I wasn't sure of their usefulness.

Now that I have bought them, I think they are absolutely essential. At first I was a little surprised at how much I would notice them being stuck on the edge of my beautiful 17" screen (because although Radtech calls them "invisible", they certainly aren't to me ).
Anyway, after a while I got used to them and actually forget they are there at all.

Of course the best part is when you close your PB: With those little Radtech cushions, there is no room left between the screen and the base for any movement. The closed book now feels much better and I feel less reluctant to move it around.

I would certainly recommend them!

Wildeepz are indispensable. I love the feel of my powerbook with them. I have had them for a year.
I must report a stain which has developed where they rub against the pb body. There is a discoloration that I have not been able to remove with alcohol. I dont really care because the wildeepz are just that good. But I am not happy about the discoloration.
