Seems like Apple is seeing a LOT of users flocking to Macs because they can now run Windows. I've never understood why someone would pollute their mac with windows really, but hey, this is a free country.

As i pondered this, it kinda shoots in the foot the old argument that Windows users wouldn't purchase Macs if OS X were released for any Intel computer.

I think Apple should try it (release OS X for any computer) and see.

With the costs of Apple computers moderating and in some case beating prices on pcs, I think people that really want superior hardware would still by Macs to run Windows AND OS X rather than just a generic Intel box to put OS X on it.

Thoughts?

There is more to it than just releasing it to the wild. Apple would have to support all the 3rd party hardware. I don't think it will happen...

I don't think Mac OSX could keep its stability and still support all that third party hardware. I know Unix and Linux does but I'm not sure if OSX would.

That's in part what makes Windows unstable sometimes.

Still it'd be fun to see

This has been discussed to death in the past, and I doubt anybody is going to provide any new insights.

Not without basically writing all the support in yourself, it doesn't.

I disagree, Apple has their own thing going with their own OS.

Agreed, Apple is doing the right thing keeping Mac OSX on Apple hardware. The company that's the worst in terms of driver compatibility is Sony. When you buy a Sony Vaio you almost never should erase the hard drive and install a fresh copy of Windows. Sony has so many proprietary drivers that unless you are using the builit in restore software your trackpad, web cam and volume controls won't work. This would be the case if Apple released OSX for any PC to install.
It's much better that Apple keeps everything under one hood.
The ability to install Windows just sweetens the pot for people that have one or two Windows apps that they can't get rid of right now. It's not just "Windows" that PC users want to install, it's generally the apps that they need.
I prefer Apple to do it this way and make an all in one computer than to license the Mac OS to everyone.

I'm buying my first mac soon and don't want the OS to be released for PCs mainly because I want the Apple developers to concentrate on new and cool software rather than spending all their time fixing things.

I also fear OS X would turn into bloatware like XP/Vista due to all the configurations it must run on.
