One unexpected feature of
iOS 8 is the presence of quick-launch app icons on lockscreens, accounts say. If a person brings an iPhone to a place like Starbucks or an Apple Store, iOS 8 will
display those locations' official apps in the lower-left corner, making it possible to jump directly into them. The function is similar to the quick Camera access already built into iOS.
Apple hasn't explained many details of the feature, but release notes for iOS 8 mention that "when Location Services is turned on, the device's current location is used to recommend relevant apps on the lock screen." It's not clear how iOS determines which apps to display, since that could be based on known IP ranges, iBeacons, or both.
