Not to reprise a notorious old thread, but I'd appreciate knowing what Mac you're using.

I'm making a spiffy little Web interface to remote-control your Mac. Part of the interface shows a picture of your Mac.

To do that, I need to be able to automatically detect what type of Mac you're running.

So:
Please copy-and-paste the following into Terminal, and report back what the result is, and what your Mac is:

sysctl hw.model ; sysctl hw.ncpu ; sysctl hw.vectorunit ; sysctl hw.cpufrequency

For example, my result is:
hw.model = PowerBook1998
hw.ncpu = 1
hw.vectorunit = 0
hw.cpufrequency = 300000000

and I have Powerbook G3 "Wallstreet"

Thanks!

PowerMac G4 400/AGP - "Sawtooth" model.

You could just use the serial number or something (shame the Gestalt ID is too general).

Anyway, I'll do the iMac later.

How would that happen? can you query the system for the serial number without invoking Apple System Profiler? Then, having got that info - you'd need all the CCC codes for every model and search against them, and what about CTO models? Still, you could colour code your iMac pictures.

humm I have just noticed something odd.
look at my Quicksilver DP 1Ghz above.
now look at foobars PowerMac DP 1Ghz MDD

hw.model = PowerMac3,6
Up one increment, I get this
hw.ncpu = 2
hw.vectorunit = 1
hw.cpufrequency = 999999996
How come the hw.cpufrequency is lower than my older but the same CPU speed Powermac?

It's a Power Mac G4 AGP 2x "Sawtooth" (February/March 2000 model, I think), with a Sonnet Encore/ST 1 GHz (upgraded from the original 450 MHz) G4 processor.
