Since a few weeks, i experienced moments of total unresponsiveness of my system. These moments last from a few seconds to a few minutes. In the meantime the harddisk makes a repeating ticking sound.

So, i looked in Console, and i see this message: kernel[0]: disk0s9: I/O error.

What is this, and what's the solution? Techtool reports no bad blocks, and S.M.A.R.T. reports no errors.

I guess it's something with the harddrive, but i'm not sure. Any idea's?

Thanks!

P.S. this is on a Powerbook G4, 1,25Ghz, with 10.4.3

This is most likely a harddrive issue. Make a backup of your personal data and replace it asap!

Smart doesn't have to detect all errors, and the clicking sound is usually the clicking sound of death

BTW, moving to PowerBook …
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

What are the actual S.M.A.R.T. parameter values? SMARTReporter will display them for you.

Which exact parameters do you mean? I downloaded smartreporter, and it says my disk is ok, but i don't see any parameters that i could paste here...

My data is backuped, so, that's not a real problem, but it isn't easy to replace a harddrive in a powerbook.

Would a reformat of the disk help?

I was wondering, why is this a strict powerbook issue, since my required a move to this forum?

When my PowerBook got the exact same symptoms, Apple replaced the hard disk under warranty. That fixed the problem.

I concur that the hard disk is likely failing.
