This movie is brilliant. Period. It's such a dark, enjoyable great movie.... I cannot believe it's f*cking $10 at best buy! I would gladly trade about half of my movies just to have this one.....

I loved this movie
Just recently picked it up about a month ago actually

I had to give it a go a few times to get a "Decent" understanding of the story and what is actually happening.
Who reads this???

You have to watch it more often. It gets better and better. Really, really, really one the - if not the best movie I have seen.

See here: The Philosophy of Time Travel

How weird. I just watched this movie two days ago. I found it quite interesting and have kind of drawn my own conclusions on what it all meant. It's one of those movies that you can overanalyze and come up with things that the writer didn't even think of when they came up with the script. I did think the "music video" at the school in the beginning to Tears for Fears' "Head Over Heels" was pretty dumb, though.

My bi-girlfriend, on the other hand, will watch anything with her current Hollywood crush, Maggie Gyllenhaal. All she had to say about the movie was that Maggie wasn't on the screen enough and her black wig at the party made her look way hot.

For me, it was one of those "hmmm, what's this... Donnie Darko... I guess I'll give it a shot..."

It's one of my favorite movies to watch now.

It is $10 because they are releasing a special addition with a new soundtrack and more scenes that explain more.

I thought the original soundtrack was amazing. Tears for Fears, The Church.

The Director's Cut is in a handful of theatres right now, if you want to see it on the big screen. For those of you in the Chicago area, I know for sure it's playing at the AMC Rivereast.

It's not a new original score. He had originally cut the film with certain 80s songs, but was later unable to attain the rights to use them so he used different songs. Now that his movie is popular, he went back and put the originals back in. I think about 1/4 of the tunes are different. From what I hear, none of the original music has changed.

Fantastic movie...can't wait to see the directors cut. Funny thing is I first saw it because of a mental mistake. I wanted to see Donnie Brasco but my brain misfired and I took Donnie Darko...same thing right? I spent the first 1/2 hour wondering how this was going to turn into a gangster movie and then the remainder of the movie wondering what the heck I was watching.

At least it was a good mistake.

Bah. It really ain't all that. We've been together for 12 years and I'm the only guy she's been with. Women on the other hand ...let's just say it's lopsided statistics and an open arrangement between us. Someday, I may write a thread about it...

Back on Darko-
One thing I don't get is there's a scene after Donnie asks his science teacher about time travel. The teacher and Drew Barrymore are sitting in the teachers lounge and she laughs, "Donnie Darko". Did I miss something there? Drew's character seemed to be "in the know" with the way she acted and the whole "cellardoor" thing she wrote on the blackboard. The science teacher seemed to have almost all the info and knew of that old lady Sparrow and her book and history. Were these two there from another dimension and knew what was going on?

Honestly, I don't know what people are getting riled up about, I think being in an open relationship with a bisexual woman would be difficult and annoying at times.

Not a fan of Drew. bah. I liked it at first but I thought it was dumb after more viewings. And Maggie Gyllenhaal is so hot! I liked her better in Cecil B. Demented.

Actually, yes. Donnie had to carry out certain actions to put the world back on track, and there are several people that know this unconsciously and play an integral role in the process.

I read that somewhere.

Just got back from the director's cut. VERY COOL. I didn't notice much of a soundtrack difference, but the movie was a SHITLOAD easier to understand...

Baically, I view it like this:

The jet engine fell off the plane on October 31st..... as it fell, there was a rip in the time space 4th dimension. The jet engine is the 'artifact'. Since there is a rip, there is a tangent universe created, which like it says in the book, will only exist for a few weeks. Frank is obviously the manipulated dead, and he gets Donnie OUT of the house for one reason: Donnie does not want to die alone, and had he died that night he would have died alone. Ah screw it, it's all contained in the pdf file.

One part that the PDF misses is this:

Donnie had to die. He HAD to. however, had he died the first night, he would have died alone. Since he was allowed to live for another 4 weeks, he fell in love, and found proof of a higher power, so he was no longer alone. Dying alone was his greatest fear...... hence, he conquered that fear, or at least solved his own problem.

I saw it, and I just don't understand why people like it so much. Of course, it's partly just a matter of taste, but a lot of people seem to like it, which I find very weird. When I tell some people I didn't like it, they immediately jump to the conclusion that I "didn't get it," but that isn't the case; I just didn't like what I got *at all*. I got a decent bit of it while watching, and I read that PDF as well.

I found the way they did the whole thing just annoying, frankly; also, it felt like they were trying way too hard to be arty for the sake of being arty. And it didn't help that Jake Gyllenhaal is the most wooden actor ever.

So, is someone up to trying to explain *why* they liked it? I'd be interested, if not convinced.

I liked it because it was a refreshing change from a lot of the films I'd seen previously - standard Hollywood affairs that held the viewer's hand all the way through. I thought Donnie Darko actually respected the viewer enough to let them come to their own conclusions, which was cool. Especially since it revolved around teenagers, and we all know how intellectually rewarding most teen movies over the past years have been.

I was impressed with how it transcended multiple genres to create a somewhat new experience. Nicely understated, especially the whole question of a higher power of some sort - compare that to, say, Signs, where you get religion shoved down your throat to the point that you want to vomit.

I thought he was GREAT for that role, and I don't know why you would say his acting is 'wooden'. He's a f*cking teenager, he's not going to be some smooth 'take charge I know what to do' type of person, he's going to be some confused kid who doesn't really know what the hell is going on but hates ********. I've never connected with a character as much as I connect with Donnie's character, all his feelings are things I've felt, save for hte world ending and a 6ft tall bunny rabbit named Frank.

I say it's wooden because every time I see him, he has exactly the same expression on his face and I find his delivery somewhat poor. It was the same in Day After Tomorrow. I was hardly expecting a smooth, take-charge kind of guy, since that wouldn't fit the role. Just because he's confused doesn't mean the acting can't be bad.

That's fair, but I take issue with one point. You say it's a refreshing change from Hollywood movies, which is true, but there are many fine independent and foreign films released all the time that don't suffer from Hollywood's major flaws. There's no shortage of them if you're interested. So being un-Hollywood isn't enough of a reason to like it in my book, though I do agree that it's nice that it was.

I thought his acting was great. He looked AWESOME in the demented skitzo scenes, and he was funny in other scenes, troubled in other scenes, confused, scared, etc. I really don't see where you're coming from at all... he had a ton of diff emotions in this film.

I saw this movie, thought about it for a couple of days afterwards, and came to the conclusion that though it was somewhat unique, it was really all a waste of time; just a while-ride without any point.

The movie tries to come off as intelligent but it really fails miserably because of a couple glaring plot holes, poor acting, unrealistic characters, and because of how hard it tries to seem intelligent without much backing.

2 out of 5 stars.

I liked the movie overall. I was disappointed to find that, though it hinted toward some interesting commentary, the movie ended up devolving into some standard fare time travel story. I would have liked to have seen the movie better develop some of that commentary about innocence, darkness, isolation, apathy, etc and eventually lead to a meaningful point. Still, I thought it was a pretty good effort and unique in some respects.

I agree that the acting was poor, but what do you expect with that kind of budget?

I really loved Donnie Darko too. I originally wanted to see it because it had such an intriguing web site. When it was for rent (no theatre in this small town), I wanted to pick it up. My boyfriend thought it looked dumb. I got my way, and we rented it anyway, and now it's one of his favourite all time movies.
