I have been staying with my sister for a while now, I have my own computer in my own room and now she has blocked porn through her ISP. She's NOT religious or anything like that and I'm 31 years old. Anyone know how to bypass/beat this system?

I suppose walking/driving down to the local gas station magazine rack isn't an option?

If it's through the ISP, you're probably out of luck. There aren't likely to be any configuration files on her machine which could be changed.

Your only real option is to get another ISP. Although there are sites out there which provide information on beating filters like this, most filtering software blocks these sites too.

um... ask her? If it's through the ISP, call em up w/ a copy of a bill... our ISP would talk to juan re: tech support all the time, even though his name wasn't on the acct (not even the same last name)
The short shall inherit the earth. Just you wait. You won't see us coming. We'll pop out from under tables, beds, and closets in hordes. So you're tall, huh? You won't be so tall when I chew off your ankles. Mofo

Do you have WiFi? You could just go take care of that at your local Starbuck's.

Wow. 31 years old, living with your sister and you can't do without porn for awhile? Suck it up and go buy some videos.

How do you block porn anyway? Technically? I don't think an ISP can do that.

Anyway, just talk to your sister. Tell her that you enjoy porn every now and then, and that you'd like her to unblock it.

There ye go. A true challange for the New Year.

a) circumvent the block
b) move out and get life of your own.

The later is definitely prefered.

Yes my situation sucks.

I'm not the loser I made myself sound, this is only temporary.

She likely blocked it because of her own family, asking her may not help and I didn't want HER to think it was important enough for me to askwhich sounds kind of silly I guess.

I was just hoping to get around it and avoid the entire issue.

Sorry to side-track, but religious people look at porn too.

Almost 18 percent of people who called themselves born-again Christians admitted visiting Internet porn sites, according to a 2000 survey of 1,031 adults by the evangelical group Focus on the Family. In a 2002 Pastors.com survey, more than 50 percent of responding pastors reported viewing pornography in the previous year.

Never said it was, it's not a huge dealreallyI just thought there might be a way to get around it. Makes things real easy that way.

Try using something like 66.119.33.134:8000 as an HTTP proxy (or another on the list at http://www.atomintersoft.com/product...xy/proxy-list/)

Enter it in the proxies tab of the Network system preference pane.

Not sure if this would work, but how about limewire or some other P2P software. Would downloads from these be blocked as well?

At/in: same difference. Yeah, that's what I was advising. Hello! Not! Somebody recommended using Starbucks as an alternative ISP spot for looking at pron, but that just sounds creepy to me.

And, I guess you're right, no one ever masterbates to pron. It's purely academic for anatomy classes.

How are connected to the Internet? Through router? What provider does she have?

I am just wondering if maybe they have AOL and use a Linksys router and has parent controls on the router or something. If this is someone thing is done by the router, maybe you can ask for the password to it and see if you can exclude your mac address or something.

Another option as people have said would be p2p apps. If she has someone like verizon, see if you can access to the newsgroups and download from there. Watch out though, some isp put a limit on how much you can download from their servers.

rozwado1 offers 3 solutions:

a) Beat your sister without warning until she figures out what's bothering you.

b) Leave this note on the fridge: "Don't need you to buy any Jergens! Thanks sis. "

c) A combination of a) and b)

No ISP blocks port 119 (nntp). Get a newsreader like Unison, subscribe to a decent commercial usenet provider like Giganews or purchase nntp access from Panic along with Unison, subscribe to all your favorite binary groups (e.g., something like "alt.binaries.erotica.midgets") and download all the porn you ever dreamt of. Whatever your sexual orientation - you'll find more porn than you can shake your, er ... a stick at.

Simpler solution - tell your sister that the filters are blocking a work site for some odd reason (or a forum site you frequent, because there is an "adult" section you usually don't use), so you would like the bypass password. Most ISPs with "child protection" filters offer a passworded bypass for the adults. You don't sound like a perv while getting what you want.

This thread now has a subtopic - create a sentence with as many instances of "pass" as possible, by itself or in other words!

I've got to say, this is one of my favorite threads on MacNN of all time. I really like how the community is really joining together and helping someone in need and coming up with creative solutions to this distressing problem. This thread should be referenced from MacNN's main page.

I think you ought to set up an HTTP proxy on an outside machine and run it through an SSH tunnel to your machine. There are smart people here that can set up such things.
