Woot is an e-commerce site that only sells one item a day. If you don't like the item listed, you have to wait until midnight to see what the next item will be. It seems that people get rather rabid about what the next woot will be. Some times the **** is, well, ****, but sometimes it's a LCD TV with dvd home theater for $500.

The best thing on woot is when they offer the 'bag of crap'. It's a bag, with three undisclosed items, for a penny. The woot forum page for the bag of crap gets 50 pages long while all the geeks speculate on what their crap will be. More often than not, it is crap, but sometimes people get the smiley face yard sign, a zip disk, and the robotic lawn mower or a portable dvd player. Not bad for a penny.

So, in the latest bag of crap thread, this guy describes his last item as "a steel jump rope of doom". Obviously, this left many people scratching their heads and saying wtf?.. So the guy throws the jump rope of doom on his scanner (didn't have a digicam) and posts a picture of it. I almost pissed myself when I saw it. It's a toilet snake. You know, for cleaning out clogged pipes? Steel jump rope of doom? WTF?

Still better than the guy that got a toilet brush with a tag that read 'refurbished' on it.

Absolutely useless, no doubt about it. But every time they offer a bag o' crap, it sells out in no time flat. Like I said, sometimes the offered product is a really good deal, sometimes it's stupid. Some of the stupider products sell the fastest. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it.

I just thought it was pretty funny that anyone would refer to a pipe snake as a steel jump rope of doom

Just a disclaimer, I am in no way affiliated with woot.com, nor have I ever purchased anything from them. I just checked it out after seeing it mentioned in an article. I find the beauty of the site in the comments far more so than the products offered. Although I really could have used that robosapian!

Very interesting site (hilarious parts) and idea...what are some of the "best" deals they have offered in the past?

The LCD TV/DVD Theater for $500...I assume that is new? Name brand? Do they only have a "handful" of these or hundreds for sale?

I forget the brand name of the tv hom theater thing deal, but as soon as something goes up, the members are off checking prices and posting back what they find. I think Amazon had the same product for about 1300. I'm not sure what the best deals are, but some of the more popular have been things like wireless keyboard/mouse sets for $20, there was an HP photo printer that seemed a good deal, lots of deals on speakers, routers and such. They've also had 40 gig ipods for about $50 off retail and some laptops. I've only been checking it for about a week or so, but if you click on the community tab, it lists all the products that have been offered. Most of the stuff seems to be new in box, although sometimes items are labeled as refurbished.

I use the Woot RSS feed, so I don't have to think about checking it.
I just added the feed a few weeks ago, and have yet to buy anything, but there are definitely some good deals, at least for stuff you want but don't really need .

that "jump rope" looks eerily like a "refurbished" toilet snake.

Woot v2.0 is being released tonight...no idea what is planned for the upgrade. I've been tempted to buy a few times, but I wish I didn't have to stay up so damn late to see what is released.

Think, I have to thank you for a wonderful belly laugh. I saw what was in the bag and immediately identified the toilet snake (history and experience can be bad things...), but I had to read the whole thing through just to understand why there was a plumber's snake in the post. And then I had to read it outloud to my wife (who's perusing jewelry sites at the moment) to explain why I busted out laughing.

NOW, I will go to woot.com and see this phenomenon for myself!

I did buy my first Woot last week -- bought my front projector (Infocus 4805) for $699; it retails elsewhere for $899. So I'm a fan of Woot now.

Since the thread last made an appearance, I bought an LCD projector from Woot. Very happy with it -- watching movies hasn't been the same since, and it was a great deal.

I've used Woot occasionally. I got an iTrip for my iPod a year or so ago for like $5. They do have some decent things every once in a while.

I didn't even notice this was a zombie thread until it was pointed out.

I wonder if this thread is what introduced me to woot? I know I have been checking it often for a long time, but have yet to buy anything.

I just discovered it recently, and have seen a few things that would have been nice to have, but nothing so far that I felt like I couldn't live without, or find elsewhere for maybe a few bucks more, when I actually wanted whatever it is.

I read from left to right and top to bottom, so ManOfSteal's 2004 post came way before your disclaimer.

I normally read the dates, but I was just skimming this thread.
