The next-generation iPad mini will get a display with 324 pixels per inch, says Chinese site My Drivers. The information stems from sources at Taiwanese Apple suppliers, who say that AU Optronics is piloting production of the new tablet. The hardware is expected to use a 2048x1536 display resolution, the same as the fourth-generation 9.7-inch iPad, despite having to compress that detail onto a 7.9-inch screen.
324ppi would give the Mini Apple's second-sharpest display, below only the 326ppi of the iPhone 5. For comparison, the 9.7-inch iPad is rated at 264ppi, while the 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro has 227. The current Mini uses a 1024x768 display, giving it just 163ppi; that makes its screen inferior in one respect to some other competing tablets, such as the Nexus 7, which has a 7-inch 1280x800 screen with 216ppi.

Not sure why they'd goos it to 300+ ppi. The retina display in the 200s for the MacBooks is fine. Not sure how much more than 1280x800 is useful on that screen except for bragging rights. Even if you wanted it for "full HD" that puts you at 1080v over 4.776 inches for 226 ppi (check my math, please)

That's just how the math works out -- Apple has a vested interest in keeping the resolutions and aspect rations of displays to a minimum to relieve some of the burden of developers in making graphics and app layouts to fit a wide range of different screens and resolutions.
In other words, the resolution of the retina mini doesn't require any changes for existing apps (retina or non) to run correctly and be sized correctly for the screen. Developers only need to take into account retina vs. non-retina screens, iPhone vs. iPad-sized screens (save for the iPhone 5, the one anomaly in the group).

Apple is scared 5hitless of the new wave of Jellybean powered Android tablets (understandably so - ) like the Nexus7 starting at $200; and just wants to make iFans feel a bit less taken advantage of by pumping up the specks of the little iPad a little.

Do you think Apple's plan was to leave the iPad mini with a non-Retina class display forever, but all of a sudden they're afraid of Android so they have to?
You don't think Apple's plan all along was to give it a Retina screen when they deemed it feasible?
Seriously?
