I was able to install and run Mac OS X on my old Power Mac 8600, thanks to this utility. The Power Mac is in a separate room away from the router, so up till now, I have used it with a Farallon/Proxim Skyline PC Card, which is connected through a PCI card adapter. It came with Mac OS 9 software, and has worked just fine. I have searched for Mac OS X drivers, and indeed have found a driver for the PC card but none to enable Mac OS X to recognize the PCI card, which means that I still cannot use the PC Card. Apparently, this ability is handled by "IOPCCardFamily.kext" in Mac OS X. However, I searched for (what seems to be) the latest version and the result was the same.

It's a shame that the (unsupported) upgrade broke this core functionality, however I found out no good modern browser options for classic Mac OS now, so I decided to try this out. I am considering going another route and purchasing a USB Wi-Fi adapter, but even there I have not had much luck finding one with Mac OS X drivers, and I wouldn't like to spend more than $50 to make this work. Before I explore that further, however, I'd like to see if there are any more options for enabling the existing wireless hardware on the Mac.

If your ancient Mac has an Ethernet port, just use something like the LinkSys WET-11. Don't use any USB network junk.

Ancient? Come on, it's not that old... Ancient might be my 6100... But, yeah, that looks like a pretty good option. It's just a bit over my budget, but probably worth it.

Slightly off-topic, but I haven't found an answer elsewhere...

I have a PM 7200/120 running OS 9.2.2

I returned this PCI wireless card, the reseller indicated it was incompatible with my Mac...

A TRENDnet TEW-423PI

I will continue my search for an inexpensive PCI wireless option.

Thanks,

joe
