Someone at work wanted one and apparently they're gone. What's the replacement for people like me that have Mac Pros?

I think it had to do with environmental regulations in Europe.

I think the successor are the built in iSights. I suspect the next version of the Cinema Displays will have them.

If I remember correctly iChat now officially supports third-party USB webcams, so there's no need for a successor.

Yes. A bunch of music gear I was going to buy fell foul of this directive too.

No matter. I'm sure it's much better for the environment to drive 400 miles for a face-to-face instead.

Except for the fact that I have yet to find one that measures up to the iSight's quality.

I've heard good things about Logitech's cameras. Have you tried any of their higher-end stuff?

I've tried the Logitech Ultra Vision USB cam.

Image quality is okay, but for some reason lighting is a problem with non-iSights.

I have no idea what Apple is doing - hardware algorithms or whatever, but the fact is that chatting on an iSight by the light of two candles and the display works fine,

You can buy a used one on ebay. They cost more than when they were new.

The (external) iSight had a LOT of hidden functionality built in, including night vision, if you knew how to enable it (the 'iGlasses' application was great for playing around and using all this functionality). I don't know of any other camera that does all the stuff you could do with an iSight and iGlasses. Some of the stuff can be done with any camera and CPU, but a lot of it was built into the iSight itself, and cannot be done any other way (eg, night vision).

Yeah I did the same once I found out they were discontinued. I wasn't using it much....sold if for $250 and purchased a $30 logitech usb which worked fine for a while until 10.4.9 update broke the functionality of the usb cams. Supposedly 10.4.11 is going to fix this.

I have a Firewire iBot from orangemicro.com and it has the "night vision" feature in iglasses as well.

Howstuffworks "How Night Vision Works"

It's essentially using image enhancement (not the thermal imaging method, I presume).

It had good video, and a nice microphone. And it was quite the looker. There's Logitech cams that are over $100 nowadays and they're lame.

I don't think Apple will be incorporating iSights into the Cinema Displays. Anyone "rich" enough to afford a Cinema Display is probably "rich" enough to own a DV camera with FireWire.

I doubt rich people want to put tripods with a DV camcorder behind their cinema displays.

Crazy. Forsure.

it is tempting to sell my iSight now that it is worth so much but I don't think I can part with it for some crappy USB thing. My parents have an iSight as well with their iMac g5. Hmm, if I sell them both I can pay for my iPhone.
AT&T iPhone 5S and 6; 13" MBP; MDD G4.

I just purchased for my GF's eMAC the xbox 360 webcam. The picture quality is top notch and works out of the box without any drivers in 10.4.9 and only costs ~50 bucks or less. I highly reccomend it!

I read this is good too. But I believe it has no mic? Could be important to some..

I sold mine to a friend for about half of what I bought it for when I got a new MacBook. Thought that was a fair compromise. Oops.
