I did have a quick search for this, but didnt find exactly what I was looking for.
So.. im trying to format/partition an external firewire hd (LaCie) for an intel OS X install. But Disc Utility throws up an error. Something like "Failed. Input/output error"
Then I just end up with an unreadable drive until its formatted for a normal PPC mac again.
Its an old drive (6 years or so), but has always worked perfectly until now. I really dont think its faulty. But im thinking maybe its somehow not compatible with the partitioning format I am trying to use. Possible?
Any light shed is appreciated

My first guess is: drive is toast, or about to be. I've never met a drive I couldn't partition GUID.

Well, that was my thought for a moment too. But it has shown zero problems besides this. And it will format absolutely fine to regular APM (Apple Partition Map) mode. Its just GUID that throws up this error.
Disk First Aid checks out fine too. No weird noises and the drive works as new with a regular format in APM.
I think im still leaning towards it being somehow incompatible, as its an early model firewire external drive. Its only 40gb though. Too small for GUID perhaps? (I know next to nothing about intel formats!) Although still plenty big enough for an OS install of course.

Check LaCie's website. There might be a firmware update for your enclosure.

BINGO! Many thanks Simon That was indeed the problem. Firmware for my old drive was several years out of date.
Now updated and formatted to GUID with no problems at all
