So I really don’t have that many friends on Facebook because I only accept requests from people I’m actually friends with. In other words: if I wouldn’t invite you over for a beer, I’m not going to accept your friend request.

I have 9 friend requests from people that belong to my cousins church. I have never even met any of these folks, so never accepted the friend request. Am I being a jerk?

No. Ignore them.

Edit: I will accept a friend request if I have met the person once, out of politeness. They meet my cruel, cruel privacy filters, though.

Your first mistake was joining Facebook. From there on, it’s just downhill.

How about a choice for family only? I'm not a huge Facebook user but it's proved invaluable in reconnecting with my extended family... even more so since I'm not living in the States.

Edit: No, you're not a jerk for ignoring their requests. I've ignored plenty of requests... especially the one from my ex. I mean what's up with that? We haven't spoken in over 5 years.

Double negative points for not having a "I couldn't care less about Facebook but posted in this thread anyway" option.

C'mon Atheist, live up to your handle. A bunch of people from his cousin's church? The entire gesture is at best empty and meaningless and at worst a ploy to flood his feed with the details of their life and thereby expose him to their Christian ways.

I'm a "light" facebook user and to that end, I'm not interested in having a huge friend list. I have my closest friends/family and I'm content. I've gotten friend requests from strangers but who saw me post something on a page. Kinda weird and I declined the requests.

One time someone from the other side of the country who I had never met sent me a friend request purely because we had the same name.

Yikes, I'd hate to see a friend request come through from my ex-wife

Hmm, who said anything about a Christian Church. It could be the Church of Cannabis for all you know.

family, current friends, college friends, high school people I vaguely remember but am too much of a wuss to ignore, and folks that I've been communicating for years online with. When I played games I used to have fellow gamers on my list just because we could trade items etc. I do filter out most people though, so there's about 30 I really want to hear what they say.

I say if it's no one you've met, then don't feel bad ignoring them!

Stoners are too lazy to do friend requests, unless you've got a photo of you eating cheetos for your profile pic.

So what happens when you click the ‘Not Now’ button; does it just send them into friend request purgatory or does it actually send them a ‘I’m just not that into you’ message?

Well, I can only speculate, considering the fact that I’m not a stoner myself.

EDIT: Okay, I just Googled ‘PHISH’ and it looks like that DVD would appeal to more of an older, senior citizen stoner crowd.

If I remember correctly, the request remains displayed as outstanding from the perspective of the person who sent it. It's like you never replied at all.

My criteria for acceptance are:

1. Someone I know personally
2. Someone I've met through someone I know personally
3. Hot chicks that went to the same schools as me

What eventually gets them ignored:

1. Posting how much you love horses, daily
2. Complaining about your overall privileged life
3. Spamming my wall with all the causes you feel strongly about

What I actually use FB for:

1. Posting smarmy remarks to people I say smarmy things to in person

To add to your "ignored" list:

4. Wall updates from stupid Facebook games.

To be more accurate, Grateful Dead videos would get you the senior citizen hippies, and Phish would get you the middle-aged grungesters.

As long as we've met somewhere (including here), I'll accept your facebook friend request. However, you may get dropped quickly as well.

If you get too political-nutso (either end of the spectrum) you get the boot as well.

Due to the ministry nature of my work, I often feel compelled to accept friend requests. Ironically, I legally can't post really anything about what I do for a living on facebook.

I meant it figuratively, like a teenager today would call someone who listens to Coldplay an old fart.

thats odd I've only gotten 1 friend request from someone i didnt know; nobody at my church cares about me either.. Are you a girl or something?

And Yes ignore them. You never know who might try to get access to their account someday gov/lawyers/background-check-people etc. and hence access to your info. As for me I only use facebook for close family/ people I cant see in person. And nobody else cares about me anyway so I dont have to worry about it...

Done.

Well, second part done. First part doesn’t seem to be possible … I can edit the poll, but there’s no ‘public’ clickbox there anymore, so it probably has to be done when creating the poll.
