I have had this machine for about 2 months
I just did a restart
and now my macBookPro wont stay on
It makes a reboot sound, the Apple appears and Then the wake up progress bar starts
for about a minute but doesn't get very far before the entire machine shuts down
Power is plugged in and working (and battery had some juice )
Control + Comand restart does nothing
HELP !
Thnx,
J

You get a progress "bar?" It is my understanding that the progress bar reflects a firmware update process. This is a rather bad thing if that's the case. Thought about a trip to the Apple Store?

Start up from your system install disc and use Disk Utility to attempt to repair the internal disk. Both Leopard and Snow Leopard will shut down the computer if they detect corruption in order to prevent further damage and/or data loss.

What do you see when you hold command-V?
It's new. Take it back.

Still not good, since Apple says to back up because the machine thinks there's a problem with the hard drive...

If you have an external USB or FW drive you can boot from, you can check the SMART status of the original drive and try to run disk-fixin' tools.

The instructions I have seen say hold down C key to boot from CD. On my Mac Air with the install disk in my CD drive that does not work. It simply sits with the apple logo and the progress circle looping forevermore.
Any ideas? thanks

Did you buy it used or new? If new, take it back.
If used, it might be a bad mobo, which means you have to remove the HD to get data from it.

Interestingly I got the boot from CD working with the install CD. Ran disk warrior - no joy. Ran install (upgrade) and it boots fine now.
