This seems to have come from out of the blue. I typically use the power button to put my iMac (mid 2007) to sleep, but it no longer does that. Now, the first time I press the button, nothing happens. The second time, I get a "failure" tone (kind of like a "chord" sound).

I'm running El Capitan because the machine isn't supported for Sierra. I haven't made any changes except for upgrades to OnePassword. Any ideas?

Reset the power management controller. If the system controller has become confused, it can mess up sleep and drain your battery.

SMC reset instructions. That's the official instructions.

If that doesn't fix it, I've also read from unofficial sources: unplug power for at least 15 seconds like they say. Press power button for 10 seconds and release. Then plug the power cord back in.

I realize that I haven't yet restarted the computer... I'll do that first, then see if there's a problem or if I'm just a little slow in first-line correction steps.
