Quake II. When I was in school I spent the better part of my free time playing it. I even had dreams of walking around with rail guns

A toss up between Baldur's Gate (one), Fallout, and Star Ocean: The Second Story.
I've started all three of those multiple times from the beginning, and haven't finished any of them.
BG is probably the most fun (and has been picked up again since they finally decided to release ToB).
Fallout isn't quite as fun, but its artistry can't be denied. It has certainly influenced me more than any other work. Video game or not.
Star Ocean is, well... Japanese.
I have told few people that after 9/11 I ran into a hole and played Star Ocean for three days straight. Can't say I regret doing that over watching the towers fall again and again.

What the nerd community most often fail to realize is that all features aren't equal. A well implemented and well integrated feature in a convenient interface is worth way more than the same feature implemented crappy, or accessed through a annoying interface.

computer game?
Starcraft and Unreal tourney
Console games?
I'd say the entire Resident evil series has stolen the most money and time, Final fantasy at close second

"And in other news, Lando Griffin, a popular student at a local high school, was killed last night when his motorcycle careened off Dead Man's Curve. Definitely Warcraft II. And that's not including all the time spent building new multiplayer maps....
I'd have to say Unreal Tournament online play is a close runner-up, though.

Pirates! from MicroProse. I've played it relentlessly from 6th to 7th grade. Only stopped playing when the controllers broke.
Days and days playing. I had all the time in the world as a kid. Use to day dream about this game, took the manual to school to read for fun. Inspired me onto history, especially military history.

Exactly. I haven't done it high, but playing UT drunk is hilarious. Hmm, come to think of it, a lot of things are hilarious when you're drunk.
Anyways, UT2k3 takes the cake for me. Can't stop. I play a little text twist online sometimes, but when it comes down to hardcore gaming, it's UT.
Anyone remember Lemmings? I've been looking for the Mac version after someone posted about it in the gaming forum.

Quake II definitely. Rail only was awesome even with a 400 ping on dial up. Ah, those were the days. Next was Q3, wasn't as much fun tho. Followed by AOE II and RtCW.
Currently it's Age of Mythology.

I read the thread title, and that is the game that entered my mind. Recently at least. I'm always finding new strategies to try out.
I wasted a large part of HS playing GoldenEye on the N64. We were so into 2 on 2 that we built a divider so teams couldn't see non-team screens. Good times. Health to -10, pistols only in Stack or Facility. Can't get much better than that. Except Complex.

EA Sports' NHL '92 - NHL 2002. In 1996 or 1997, I'd have taken on anyone in the world at this game (on the PC). I thought the PlayStation 2 versions would top it... But it was downhill from there. I didn't even buy it in '03 or '04. It went from new features and more realistic each year to "let's see how much loud alternative music we can jam onto the disc." As I've said in other threads though, maybe I'm just getting old.

Sonic the hedgehog 1,2,3. Probably multiplayer in Sonic 2 the most. The casino level frickin' rocks.
Monkey Island 1,2,3 I have gone through them all at least a couple of times. Oh and the same with Day of the tentacle.
Heroes of might and magic 2. Neverending hotseat fun.
Bolo
Dune 2 (the original RTS)
Grand Theft Auto III
I don't play much games nowadays, but we had a long Mario Party 5 run yesterday, and I found it to be a very cool little game. We also play a lot of Mario Kart Double Dash. Recent timestealers include Zelda and WC3.

I think that would pretty easily be the Super Mario Bros. games. I wasted a truly scary amount of time on those as a child, particularly trying to pull off tricks like getting to the minus world.
After Mario, I'd say Glider Pro, Marathon, and Project Builder.

I'm going to limit this to playing games on Macs 'cause I played a lot of Commodore 64 games when I was young.
The games that have taken away the most time from my life:
The Incredible Machine
Sim Ant
Quake
Carmegeddon II
Driver
Age Of Empires
I'm leaving out all the games I play via emulators....

On my old PC: Homeworld, Homeworld Cataclysm
On my new PC coming next week: Homeworld2
You can gather from that that I am an absolute Homeworld fan. It's a crying shame that Relic and Sierra never ported any of the series to the Mac because there is really no other RTS that compares in stunning scenery and music and that simply amazing feeling of space.
Check the sites out, and if you have a 400Mhz plus PC at home with a 3DFx Voodoo 3 or so, download the Homeworld demo and just be amazed. (Might even run ok on a Dual G5 with VPC)

It has to be Civilization and its derivatives.
I saddens me to think of all the books I could have read (or even written) in the thousands of hours I've clocked up on that game.
It is teh devil!!1!1
