Hi,

A friend of mine gave me his iMac G3/400 (Slot loading) to install OS X - and that I did. Everything went fine, it installed but now for some reason I cannot connect to the internet. The ethernet port doesn't seem to be working, when I connect the iMac to my router, it doesn't get an IP-address via DHCP and setting it manually doesn't help either - I can't even ping the router.

If I take that very same cable and hook it up to my iBook, everything works fine so it's not the cable that doesn't work but definitely the ethernet port. Any idea?

Here are some questions that came to mind:

What version of OS X?
Have you tried a different port on the router?
Have you tried cycling the power on the router?
Did your router run out of IP addresses to give out?
Have you tried the advanced tab and manually setting the speed of the ethernet port?
Have you opened the terminal and typed ifconfig to see if the ethernet adapter shows up?

Good luck!

Open Network Utility. In the Info tab select en0. What does it say for Link Status?

Weird... it ain't working in OS 9 anymore either. I know this guy has a DSL modem hooked up to his iMac but I also remember him having trouble with his old modem that worked just fine some other place... dunno what he did then though. It's definitely not working with my DSL modem hooked up to it, neither OS X 10.2.8 nor OS 9.2.2
But I think his ethernet port is broken somehow, he'll pick it up tomorrow and we'll see if it still works over at his place.

I am stunned by the nice performance though. After all, it's just an iMac G3/400 with 320MB of RAM. I remember my old G4/450 with 768MB of RAM pretty much sucking in OS X 10.2 but this is real nice. Even Office v. X works nicely, not lagged or whatever. I'm actually impressed.
