is there a way to play music, or mp3 audio files without having to use my evil-getting smarter-by-the-update-controlling iTunes songs?

I have been able to open up the drive with ipod link, but they all have coded names - what i thought was Bethoven ended up bing Slayer.

Please help, i love my iPod, i hate iTunes and its big-brother attitude.

There is nothing wrong with iTunes and it is not 'Big Brother'
It is the best way to manage your music safely and securely on your iPod.
Use other methods at your own risk.

I was being a little dramatic, to add "spice" to the post, but apparently you took it too serious.

I use iTunes, i am a musician, I have my own music, purchased and composed as well and i don't nessesarily agree with the restictions iTunes employs and how there is only one way i can manage my content.

what i asked is, i want to know if its possible, and if someone knows of any firmware or software that sucessfully lets me manage my music the way I want. granted, i am not going to sell, distribute or make any profit from other artist's work. thats all, iTunes works for you, i'm glad... I just want to have control over the files i OWN and want to manage them as such.

Dont get me wrong, its a cute little toy, and iTunes is a great piece of software, but theres more potential for the iPod, and third party solutions could mean the difference for users like myself.

regards

What do you wish you could do that you can't, exactly?

Tomchu,
The main basic need is to open the drive and access files and folders as on any other device, if you could have root folders for music, video and photos - where i could access my files as i wish, whenever i want - without needing itunes - or for that matter, not having to memorize DFCR%GB4 means my favorite Zepplin tune.
it aint that big of a deal anyway really, i was just curious about it - and if this "lack of" if you will, of iPods third party software is an Apple copyright thing ? Could it be plausible?

What restrictions? iTunes has an option to not sync your entire library so you can put only the songs you want on it.

Uhhh.... iTunes does very little to "restrict" your music. To me it sounds like you may have a phobia or something.
iTunes doesn't DRM any music not purchased through the store, so feel free to do with your own music as you wish. Good luck with the loss of autosyncing.

Another option besides iPod disk is just let iTunes do its sync thing for playback and then use the hdd side of the iPod and simply drag your songs onto it in a folder schema you want. Then you can do whatever you want with your "files" even though Apple "hides" your iTunes-to-iPod imported songs.
