Just finished "The Drawing of the Dark" and dug it.

Usually I can get an idea from Amazon as to where I should go next, but he seems so universally liked I'm having trouble.

Any recommends?

The Anubis Gates.

The best of the lot, in my opinion. If you like Powers, you might also like Iain M. Banks.

The Anubis Gates is my favorite of his, and I just finished Declare, as well, which was great.

Same sorts of things: world history mixed with his own version of the paranormal and magic. For me, he never gets too overboard with the fantasy half of his books. I love it.
Can you still feel?

Also, The Baroque Cycle by Neill Stephenson is to be recommended.

I never finished Last Call, but my wife loved it.
You are in Soviet Russia. It is dark. Grue is likely to be eaten by YOU!

Thanks for the advice!

I think I'm going to do "The Anubis Gates" first, and save "Last Call" for my next plane ride to Vegas.

At least with "The Drawing of the Dark", I totally agree Powers hit just the right blend of history and fantasy.

The two other things that I found most notable were how he made his 16th century characters seem like normal, modern people, with nary a hint of the "ye olde". Likewise, though swordplay is often a hefty component of fantasy, I don't ever think I've read a fantasy novel where you actually get a feel for the thought process of a master swordsman.
