Nothing serious, I am just wondering if there is many people using a Power Macintosh 5500 out there.

If you use one and could post something interesting about it, that would be nice.

Almost, I have a 5200/75LC. Ive heard that a swap is possible w/ the mb from the 5500. I would like to do this, but every board I see is overpriced.

Besides that, its a decent Mac (tho a bit slow) the form factor is excellent.

Keda, the Mac you have and the Power Mac 5500 are very different. The 5500 has either a 225MHz, 250MHz or 275MHz so it is much faster.

I know, but they look the same and both have slide out mother boards. According to lowend Mac, it is possible to do the swap. But, like I said, the cost is not worth it.

Keda, the Mac you have is one of those rare one which have the slowest PowerPC processor, the PowerPC 603. The Power Mac 5500 is much more "modern". It is interesting that Sun Remarketing is selling a Power Mac 5500/225 for $949.00. http://www2.sunrem.com/sun01.w?pt=115-550

It is also interesting that the Power Mac 5500 and 6500 are very similar. Although one is in an all-in-one case and one is in a tower case, they are both built on the Gazella architecture. The processors, memory, level 2 cache, etc. are very much the same. The 5500 was mostly sold in the education market. Our school bought a bunch of them, along with all in one G3s (not iMacs, translucent light gray-ish tops with holes in them). They are all 225MHz versions.

Simon, are the 5500 at your school have a level 2 cache in each of them? If they do, can you see how large and can you run the MacBench 5 from http://www.macbench.com/ program to see what you get for the CPU score and FPU score.

The 5200/75LC has the distinction of being THE slowest PowerMac ever made. I have an old MacWorld where they bench it against a 6100. Despite the 601v.603, the 6100 wins.

Ive seen the prices at sun. As I said before...overpriced. I got my 5200 w/a Color Classic for $200, at a Mac User Group sale. The 5500 is an outdated machine. Especially when you can buy iMacs for less than that. But , Id still love to find a cheap 5500 board.

Guess what wrong with those information. The Power Mac 5500 has one 7" PCI expansion slot but the info there said that it has an LC slot, that's wrong.
