I run the website (loosely used term) for a small organization. We currently have an excel file somewhere with 300+ members names in it. We'd like to setup a simple web database where people can, say, search for any members living in Pennsylvania or similar. It would only need a few fields (name, location, organization, email, phone) but expansion would be great. I know enough about PHP and MySQL to get it installed and maintain something, but I just don't know where to start, and I'm hoping that there is an OpenSource or other cheap/free contact database I could install and use.

In an ideal world we'd like a user to be able to login and control/edit their information and what they have available to the general public. I understand this would be much more complicated that a static, searchable database, so I'll hold on that for now, unless it's included in a package somewhere. I'm hoping someone on here can help me out, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

Why not start with installing phpMyAdmin? Using it, you can create your database, structured appropriately, and import your data from your Excel spreadsheet directly into your database.

If you want a more streamlined interface, write your own, but you may find that phpMyAdmin's interface works fine for you.

I may start with that tonight, at least to setup the database. I'm probably a little shakier on the front-end side for displaying and searching within in once it is setup.
