Remote Access- weird problem

Let's make this simple:
I have 2 macs. Both have identical log-in details to the ISP-same tel. number, same login ID, same password etc etc.
One of them logs in fine.
The other always fails authentication, despite the other one not being logged in at the same time, and despite starting afresh with new Remote Access prefs. etc.
Can someone shed some light on this?

Does the Remote access window say "authentication failed", waits for a bit and returns a modem error?

I noticed this problem when I upgraded from a G3 Powerbook (MacOS 8.51) to a G4 (MacOS 9.04). Using the internal modem to connect on the G4 results in the "authentication failed" error for the same ISP. Changing the modem from V.90 to V.34 didn't resolve the problem. What can be done?

I finally solved my problem by exporting the configuration file from the powerbook and then importing it into the G4. From all appearances, they are identical (same options checked), but the configuration now authenticates on the G4. I don't know why it works now; as they say, "It's a mystery..."

baxter, which configuration file do you mean?
TCP/IP or Internet Preferences or what?

I thought the authenication info was stored in Internet Prefs so I'm curious to know which file too.

I exported the configuration from the Apple Remote Access control panel (configurations panel). I had the "Save password" option checked, so it exported everything (I'm assuming).
