People may write the articles, but there is definitely some sort of Content Management System that rewrites the pages, maintains archives, etc. Not sure what they are using and have often wondered that myself...

It seems that your site needs more than a CMS.
I tried to sig-spam the forums.

haha, yah no kidding... actually I don't have FTP access but I wanted to outright make the forums unusable till I have some time to deal with problems we were having (IE bratty users) and I didn't want to really deal with it this semester, so I just yanked out the config table in the database

That said if I do put it back up I think I might put in phpNuke... anyone got any better suggestions?

A *Nuke system might be overkill for what you want... MT seems to be the 'in' thing these days... and there are a few other open CMS's out there. Wouldn't hurt to do a search at sourceforge.net to see what's out there. But you probably won't get exactly what you want without a fair bit of tweaking (which means time), since everything is either boring or sucks in its default configuration.

If your website fosters any type of community involvement (MacNN and your site, clayshaker, are just two examples) then annoying, disrespectful, arrogant, bratty, bitchy, stupid, and just plain ugly users are a constant you can't really do anything about.

Teh intarweb brings out the asshole in people. It's a fact!

The "in" thing? MovableType has been THE CMS to use for the last couple of years. It looks like 3.0 will be even awesomerer.
