So, I had this old blue car that I sold many yers ago and then re found in a barn in Ireland so I bought it back.

It wasn't the happiest thing in the world:

So I started taking it apart.

Which became scary

But I kept going

until this

Then it all went in a van

And it's just come back like this

Which is exciting. Now I just have to remember where all the bits went.

Did you modify it for racing originally, or did whomever bought it from you do all the racy bits?

Sweet Lotus, btw. Looks clean.

I've quite extensively modified it. The engine, suspension brakes and interior. The suspension, brakes exhaust and carbs etc are all ex Group B rally parts form Peugeot Talbot Sport as fitted to their GrB Samba Rally cars in the mid 1980s. It was fun but falling apart. It's going to be reborn as a full on rally replica of a late 70s Peugeot works car.

It’s a 1980 Peugeot 104 ZS coupe. One of about 4 in the UK
More common (ish) in France.

Those in France would be driver-on-left.

Projecting from the UK numbers, it's possible your version is getting rare worldwide.

I was pining for my old mk1 Astra GTE the other day. I read somewhere there are only 12 of them still on the road in the UK. They did rust like champions though.

I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

I would take most how many figures fairly broadly but yes there can't be many mk1's left. Quite a nice sharp shape. Black suited it better than the more common white IMO.

They don't look bad in red either. Silver is the most prized as the metallic paint helped protect the bodywork slightly. Supposedly.

So update time

Blue car is now white, and working.

Stage 2 is the wide group 2 arches and the rally decals plus a few other bits including lowering it and adding my yellow wheels.

Nice. Definitely will look better once it’s lowered. It looks like it’s up on tip-toes right now.

My neighbor across the alley from me showed up with the carcass of a 1980 mk1 VW Cabriolet. It’s the same color as your wheels. He swears he’s going to restore it. I didn’t bother to ask him ‘why?’ He got it for $300. The engine actually runs.

Good for you doing something you like, especially a long lost car. It is a good hobby. Personally, I find that car to be appallingly ugly. And it is just so old and in such poor condition, that your huge amounts of money that have went into restoring it could have went elsewhere. But that is just me. Happy you like. And the white looks a lot better than blue.

You did a job well-done restoring this old car of yours. It seems like you had fun fixing it, and now it perfectly works.

Thats a good price. There's a premium on these older VWs. There is no why. It's a hobby. The amount of money spent on my car so far wouldn't cover one of the eight road and trail cycles my brother has in his garage. And he's not a hard core cyclist.

Here's the equivalent side pic from when it was on the road in 2003.
Still too high.

Please don’t tell my wife … so far her reaction to my hobby, cycling, was that “at least you’re staying healthy and it is cheaper than a car”. (Amongst my peers, my bike is the cheapest by far, it is cheaper than the custom pain jobs on one of my team mate’s bikes … and he has two.)

PS Your brother would refer to his two-wheeled, human-leg-powered marvels as bikes.

And don't get me started on the amount of money people spend on their golf bats either!

Top Gear did an episode way back when where the guys were given the typical golf equipment purchase price to instead go buy a car and race it. That episode is what prompted me to go and buy a crappy car to do fun things with. No ragrets.

This guy has some very creative genes: because he is a Michelin-starred chef, his bike prominently features the Michelin man in some places (although most people assume it has to do with Michelin tires …) as well as some inspirational slogans in French.
