Greetings and salutations, Vax.
No, you can't do this. As a rule of thumb, if Quicktime doesn't have the codec, neither does iMovie.
Live long and prosper.

There's an MP3 codec in QuickTime, but it's really just the dec half of it (you can't encode with it).
However, at http://qtcomponents.sourceforge.net there's a codec which will let you both play and export Ogg Vorbis files. That might be worth looking into.

You've got iTunes. You've got QT Pro?
Open your movie in QT. Edit > Extract Tracks > Sound Track. Save As > Self Contained. Open this file in iTunes. Advanced > Convert to mp3. Open/Import the mp3 in QT. Edit > Select All > Copy. Open your original movie in QT. Edit > Add Scaled. Delete your unconverted sound file. Edit > Delete Tracks > Old Sound Track. Don't forget to File > Save As > Self Contained with this new movie.
BTW, why mp3? I thought IMA 4:1 was a good codec for sound?
Regards,
T H Allen

First, you don't have to extract the sound. Any file that QT can play, iTunes can play (or convert) the sound of.
Second, always Add Scaled the video to the audio, never the reverse. In this case, the tracks should be the same length anyway, so just Add. Changing the timescale of the video won't be noticable, but changing the speed of the audio will be.
