I'm looking to go the Euro route with my future bachelor pad, and my first step is to get a bed. I'm into the minimalist style, but I'm having a hard time finding good sites with lots of examples. I could go to Barnes&Noble to browse mags, but it's too late on a Sunday for that. Post any good links you got for that.

Also, I've decided to build my own bed after seeing the price tag on some of these platform beds; $3000 for 4-6 pieces of finished wood nailed together? Hell No.

I'm going for something like this:

or this (even though this is a dog bed):


shouldn't be too hard: A few 2x6s and some wood for a headboard. 4x4 blocks to support the frame and some slats to support the bed. And if I make it myself, I can reinforce it so I won't have any problems with it breaking from excessive force.

I'll probably use a dark cherry and depending on the quality of the wood, I may take it to a finisher to get it done. Should cost less than $400 (not including my time).

Any advice?

Yeah, I always had the same feelings. A friend of mine made something like that himself. Not that hard. Anyway, the second bed is basically what I have and I got it (twin size) at Ikea for $99. If you want you could stain it yourself to match that color.

the only difficult part really is cutting the hinges for the corners. you wouldnt even need nails if you do that part correctly. just glue.

I'm gonna screw the hell out of it with corner blocks. I wouldn't want it falling apart on me in a dire situation.

I'd do the IKEA, but i'm a fan of real wood.

no a true minimalist would dig a hole in the floor so the bed looks like its part of the floor, and not above it.

Haha, two of my ex-girlfriends had this bed (IKEA name: Malm) too - damn this thing can cause some pain!!

After doing furniture repair for 5 years, the only bed I found that didn't rock and squeak was a sleigh bed with 12" sides that had a matching 12" metal 90� bracket bolted to the head/footboard behind it.

I think a square box design with dovetailing (first pic) would prevent this.

It's important to remember that glue is stronger then nails and doesn't make a "squeaking" sound usually.

The ends are a dovetail. They are VERY strong and if built properly only need glue (no pins, no nails, and no screws)

Depending upon how you build it, you could simply paint it and it would look just as nice. The trick is getting the bed to match the bedding... without having it match too much... and bringing the room together.

I've had this bed for 2 years and found it to be the most sturdy. Even with 2 people on it it doesn't move in the slightest as the end boards are so large and it has a steal beam running down the middle.

Just remember that a bed isn't a 'Plank with legs and a mattress on the top'.
Half the 'comfort' in a bed, as a posed to a mattress on the floor, is in the bendy strips of wood that the mattress sits on.

I actually left this bed when I moved to NYC and I miss it..I used an air mattress in it. It fit perfectly in the frame and provided a wonderful nights' sleep. I'm hoping to get the same frame in a double-size (being NYC, and all) sometime soon.

Keep in mind though, that mother is INCREDIBLY HEAVY, and definitely a 2-3 person job to assemble.

Back on track: I think the ikea crap looks cheap.

To go with a minimalist style the bed frame should not be seen. A simple platform that is slightly smaller than the mattresses is a good clean look. You can even add some storage into it. It would be cheap to build your self.
