OK, this is weird and I'm wondering if anyone else has had this happen.
I upgraded two Macs to Leopard yesterday. My 17" Intel iMac was upgraded using Erase and Install. Everything worked perfectly. When I went to upgrade my 17" MBP, the installer hosed my previous system and didn't complete the Upgrade installation. I was left with a non-working system and had to do an Erase and Install. No problem after that.
I had been using the MBP all night with no issues. Then, Software Update notified me of the small Leopard update. I installed it and restarted. Next thing I know, I am in an endless loop of "Setup Assistant". I fill everything in, and it just brings me back to the beginning. I quit Setup Assistant, and it restarts and brings me back to the beginning. I had to do an Archive and Install to get this back up and running. Anyone else see this before?
Everything seems fine now, but I am reluctant to install that small Leopard update on either machine. I'm not sure if that's what caused this or some other glitch in the Matrix.

What happens if you Force Quit Setup Assistant.
Oh, and make sure SA hasn't inserted itself into your Login Items.

Force Quit did nothing - it actually hung the system. Couldn't even get to the System Prefs to see if SA was in the login items.

what worked for me:
hold down shift while booting to get into safe mode, then restart...
leave it alone, let it start up by itself, intall updates, whatever.
problem solved.
other than the install hiccup, Leopard runs wonderfully.

What a nasty little bug...
So here are the STEPS if you get caught in the Leopard Setup Assistant Loop Bug ---
1) Boot into Safe Mode by holding down the shift key upon boot... (wait, wait, wait... it will finally come up)
2) DO NOT LOG IN
3) Hit the back arrow key
4) Then hit the restart button
5) Wait, it will then run/rerun the updates
6) Wait, wait, wait and it will finally restart...
Then you are back to normal without any data loss...
I tried to reinstall OSX, it didn't work, but after about 2 hours, the above STEPS do work...
