This is such a fun topic! I've always felt challenged to try and come up with the best movie/role an actor/actress has played. Here is my list (so far):

Dustin Hoffman - Rain Main (Raymond Babbitt: REAL close second is Kramer Vs. Kramer)

Gene Hackman - Really tough one. I'd say The French Connection (Jimmy Doyle: Couple of REAL Close seconds are Hossiers, and Crimson Tide)

Denzel Washington - Another real tough one. I'd say Philadelphia (Joe Miller: Couple of REAL close seconds are Glory, Crimson Tide, Training Day, Inside Man, and The Hurricane)

Tom Hanks - Forrest Gump (Forrest Gump: Real close seconds are Philadelphia, and The Green Mile)

Morgan Freeman - The Shawshank Redemption (Ellis Boyd "Red" Redding; some REAL close seconds are Glory, Driving Miss Daisy, and Unforgiven)

Russell Crowe - Real tough one! I'd say A Beautiful Mind (Johnj Nash: Real close seconds are Gladiator, The Insider, and L. A. Confidential)

Clint Eastwood - Man, maybe the toughest of all! I'd say Gran Torino (Walt Kowalski: so many real close seconds, including Unforgiven, In The Line of Fire, Sudden Impact (best "Dirty Harry" movie), and Million Dollar Baby)

There are more, but I'd like to see what others have to say.

Some more obvious ones:

Robert De Niro - So, so many to choose from! I'll say Casino (Sam "Ace" Rothstein; Numerous close seconds, including Goodfellas, Heat, Awakenings, The Deer Hunter, etc.)

Jack Nicholson - One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest (R. P. McMurphy; close seconds include A Few Good Men, The Departed, Chinatown, and Terms of Endearment)

John Voight - Midnight Cowboy (Joe Buck; close seconds include The Odessa File, Deliverance, and his portrayal of FDR in Pearl Harbor: The best part of the movie "Pearl Harbor" - YouTube)

Robert Redford - The Natural (Roy Hobbs: close seconds include Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid, All The President's Men, and The Sting)
