Can resetting the region on a CD-RW/ DVD-ROM drive on a G4 Powerbook running OS X 10.2.8 result in a drive that cannot boot from CDs? A user inserted a DVD purchased in Hong Kong which caused the region to be changed. Now the machine cannot boot from ANY bootable CD. Otherwise the hardware / software passes all tests.

Have you tried booting without the CD in the drive and holding down the OPTION key. When you get to the menu, insert the CD and hit the refresh button. You should then be able to choose to boot off the CD. Does that work?

yes, no go that way either.

Additional note: When the system is booted off the HD you can read ANY CD and run software from the CD without any problems.

follow up with info from Apple.

The drive is limited to 5 changes, nothing new there. But in fact it is the reason the unit cannot boot from CD. They claim I will need a 'different media kit' to be able to boot from the drive if it changed from region #1 (US).

so take this as a warning of sorts.

Have you tried updating the firmware?
Don`t know if that`ll help.

recent powerbooks ship come with software install DVDs, not CDs... though they are just discs with data on them. why video region should affect booting, i don't know.
