I've read in previous posts that the scroll wheel on MS mice is supported in the later builds. I just want to make sure that this includes the intellimouse explorer, as I am thinking about picking one up on saturday when i pick up osx. I haven't seen any posts that directly stated "intellimouse explorer works" so I just want to make sure. Thanks

Sheesh, quick replies.

I dont care too much about not being able to program the buttons at this point. I just really want a scroll wheel and will look forward to MS releasing drivers in the future (i hope!) allowing programmable buttons.

Thanks.

No support in Carbon unless a dev puts it directly into the app.

So no carbon support means... no scrolling in the finder..?

Oh well, scrolling in a browser is where it's most important IMHO. I can deal.

The Mouse itself is not supported. Many of the things which the mouse does, are.
For instance, the Mouse itself takes care of translating and sending data to the computer. This is why the optics work rather than the mouse ball, it's taken care of on the Hardware side. The OS takes care of things like "What do I do when i get this kind of signal from the mouse?" like clicks, and wheel turns. The reason the extra buttons don't work is because they're non-standard.

At this point, The Intellimouse page at MS specifically says that Mac OS X is not support. There's no mention of when drivers will be available (or if, although that's kind of silly to think they'd abandon us completely) It's also important to note that MS really didn't write the drivers for the Mac. The Intellipoint drivers are really simply an iteration of USB overdrive.

Kinda funny, the Technology was developed by HP, the software by shareware developer. The only thing MS really gave to this thing was a design.

I actually emailed Microsoft's Mac team with the Intellimouse-support issue a few weeks ago. Go figure, they actually sent me a response.

Yes, they plan on full support for the Intellimouse in OS X.

They didn't say exactly when, but they did say that they're working on it. Maybe they were just blowing smoke up my, er, pants.

FYI, I also contacted the dreaded Iomega Corporation, asking for info on a Carbonized version of Iomega Tools. They also responded, saying that they were fully behind OS X and are developing said software. (As an editorial side-note, I hope their tools work better in OS X than in 9.x.)

Hope this helps folks!

all cocoa apps scroll w/ the intellimouse wheel. IE is the only carbon app i've come across that does, other carbon apps, including the finder, don't support the wheel.

And I am one of the lucky few. Who won that fight between Rando and Eastman?
