If they can record (stereo, min 44.1kHz, yadda yadda), I'm getting the biggest (60 GB) model.
ONLY if they can record.

I just bought one! I knew this would happen!
Oh well. Depending on whether or not they actually ship in August, I might not even be in the country to get one.

Easier said than done. I don't think it's that easy to do or it would be done.
I bet they're adding colors after seeing how important the color decision is for those who bought the Mini.

If they do make the form factor smaller as stated by that source, then a greater battery capacity is going to be hard.
Having said that, resolving your greatest criticism must be a priority.

iPod has the only line that apple has shipped the day that they said that they would ship them.

The iPod mini is officially available in Europe on July 24th. I see that the iPod is a different line, but it's not a good sign for those who get their iPod mini the end of July.
On the other hand, Apple has to push the iPod as far as they can.

Agreed, look at the mini battery capacity. It's less.
Wasn't my criticism. I was just responding to someone else's expectations.
I still have my original 1st gen going strong. Battery doesn't last as long but I plug it in every night by habit anyway.

Depends what they add to it, I want an iPod, but the current range has been around for twelvety-six and a half months now, and I've been holding off. Not bothered about a colour case, If I was getting an iPod mini, it'd be the silver one.
Things that would be nice for me:
Bluetooth that works as a handsfree with a bluetooth phone, playing MP3's on my Tungsten, I miss calls and texts when I'm walking to work or home sometimes (not calls so much, my phone vibrates).
Digital camera backup, whether its cable or card reader, it'd be nice to dump the pics off onto an iPod (I know there's a Belkin thingie to do this, but thats an extra).
iPod mini design, shape and button layout. It's just a nicer shape than the big iPod, the chrome back looks like a pain in the arse to keep scratch free and clean, and the add ons like iTrip look better on a mini (the mini iTrip's shape, btw, is an extension of the mini's body, in white).
Colour screen, would be nice, and would fit in with the digital camera backup. Bigger screen is more important, i think.
My 0.02 worth.

ONLY because the demand FAR exceeded the available supply.

I don't get this. An iPod that is smaller and styled similiar to the mini, but with ten times the capacity of the mini?? Apple must be planning on a price drop for the mini soon. Otherwise, where's the incentive to buy a 4GB mini?

Might be a good time for me to upgrade too. Would be nice if it works in some way with the Airport Express.

Oh yeah. A wireless implementation for the iPod would be a KILLER feature. You have to believe Apple is working on this.

ok, here's that website with pics of an ipod taken apart
http://www.chipmunk.nl/iPod/
Look at the size of the hard drive to the size of the case, how the hell can they make the iPod smaller than it is now? Unless they mean thinner again, I can't see where they can make a reduction.

Awww..I think it's cute how you wanted to jump in on the discussion and all...but this thread is about speculating on the next-gen iPod. Maybe you could elaborate on your point a little? Hmm?

And what exactly is it that makes demand for the mini exceed supply? A smaller form factor and colour. If the Thinksecret rumour is correct and we do see smaller, colour ipods, we could very easily see a similar situation to that of the mini's; available in the US with several week wait and delayed international shipping.
Demand exceeding supply is good for Apple, but not necessarily so for the faithful (aside from the fact that it results in newer products being developed)

US$30 for a new battery that lasts longer than Apple's.

The faithful meaning a handful of no-life crackpots hanging around on an internet forum and stupid enough to go running off IMMEDIATELY the second Steve Jobs OMG OMG OMFG!!! releases a new product.
The rest of the planet goes on revolving and really doesn't take notice of international iPod mini release delays until the product is heavily advertised.
Which they're not over here, yet.
What does suck is deciding you want one and not finding one in the store, with a waiting list of four weeks, but I assume Apple won't let that happen again with the iPod.

I disagree. Underestimating demand is a sign of bad planning.
Only hard-core Apple fans are always willing to wait until something is released with a great delay. Other's move on, get something else.
We're living in a culture of instant gratification. If that can't be granted, only some will wait.
Overall, not being able to deliver is BAD.

It looks like I'll be selling the 20 GB iPod that I just won...
If it has a special engraving, though, what should I do? I can't sell a collector's item...crap...
I don't even want an iPod, and now, with the special $200 college student rebate, and with winning the 20 GB iPod, I'll be getting two iPods (15 GB and 20 GB). I want to sell them both, but again, there's the issue of the 20 GB being a collector's item...
...but if it's an old version, given right before a new version is announced, its value as a collector's item sort of shrinks...doesn't it?

Maybe they underestimated, but then again it could be entirely out of their control. If the bottleneck is the hard drive manufacturer, then it's really not their fault. What should they do? Keep the product a secret until they have a good stockpile of them? Then they're running a huge risk of overestimating demand, which is probably worse.
