I have the chance to get 512 dimm for my iMac (slot-loading) but there are conflicting specs on Apples site. Some say the max for slot-loading it 512 and others say 1GB...
See, I was going to get 512 now and maybe get another 512...I already have 2x 128MB in there so I will have 640 if all goes well (I will obviously have to take one 128 out)... But if I can only have 512, whats the point.

So can I use more than 512? and on another note...it doesn't matter if I get PC133 does it?

thx in advance :-)

[well then I did a search (I know, i'm a dumbass) and All looks good, so if anyone out there want to upgrade an iMac Slot-loading to more than 512mb, you have to have the newest firmware update imstalled.]

Apple's database just hasn't been updated since the 512 chips came out. The imac can get up to 1gb i think. U can get 133, but you won't get any benfits, as the bus speed is limited to 100mhz. 100 might be cheaper. just get the 100, unless you wanna put the ram in another machine later with an 133mhz bus.

Actually 133 can be cheaper. Because most of the PC world uses it, they make more. Weird but mostly true. ;\ So I am getting 133.

The slot loading iMac will take up to 1Gb RAM. You can use PC133; it's all we sell any more for iMacs, G3s, and G4s at the Apple Specialist where I work. I have a G4/400, which uses 100Mhz memory, and I have 4 256Mb PC133 chips in it, and it works just fine.

Ahh the sweet, sweet non-sound of 640MB. It's all good, absolutely no page-outs in OSX yet!

I am thinking of getting another 512 chip and having a Gig. I could not have imagined having a Gig, I remember 1MB being more expensive. Even when I bought my iMac 400 SE, I didn't think i would ever get a Gig of memory. I would definitely encourage anyone out the using OSX to upgrade your memory. I bought my 512MB for 100 CDN! U can too!

I have an iMac 400DV. I ordered 2 512MB DIMM's that were guaranteed mac firmware compliant. It will boot with each one seperatly, but not both together. Both 512's also boot with the stock 64 along side. I just bought this iMac used, do I need to download a firmware update? Resetting PRAM and logic board don't help. At only 51$ each, I hope I can use both!

I am running OS 9.0 Mac OS ROM 3.1.1.

Any suggestions?

You should definitely try applying the firmware update. Other than that, I'm not sure what you could try.
