Alaska Man Grows 64.8-Pound Cantaloupe
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - A man has done the impossible in any other Alaska summer: growing a record-breaking cantaloupe, a fruit that craves heat and founders in rain. In a season marked by hotter and dryer weather than usual, Scott Robb has produced a 64.8-pound muskmelon - an unofficial world record. He plans to enter the colossal fruit in the Alaska State Fair next week.

Robb, a longtime farmer, owns four world records: a 75.75-pound rutabaga from 1999, a 42.4-pound kale and 43.7-pound kohlrabi from 2001, and last year, a 63.3-pound celery.

How do you grow fruit that big? Can I buy some of what he is using for my garden (if I were to have a garden that is).

Do they test the melons at the state fair for banned substances like in the Olympics?

Same here, or green melons as I call 'em.

It's Alaska... They're summers have like 1 hour of darkness total.

These are good, too:

It's a galia melon, and it comes into the world when a bad, bad canteloupe cheats on its wife with a more juicy and delicious honeydew.

I love good fresh sweet cantaloupe. Honey Dew Melons are nice, but there is just something special; about cantaloupe.

Actually, they do. They use metal detectors to make sure you didn't implant something. It's not such an issue with a giant melon, but people have been known to try and cheat with the giant cabbage. You can put a rock or ball of lead in when it's small, and the leaves grow up around it making it invisible.

Here's a photo of the melon:

Doesn't even look like a cantaloupe.

What that variety with the section-like indentations (kind of like that big one)? Those are very good, quite sweet.
