Question for developers.
If sherlock now only searches the net, where is the option to index the hard drive?

Has anybody else experienced the disappearing cursor when in M$ Entourage or Word? Whenever I mouse over the body of the document, the cursor vanishes, when I move the mouse onto the toolbar or back over to the desktop, it reappears...

I've seen it running on a Pismo and it seems to be Snappier. Right now it looks to me like a bigger jump than that from 10.0.4 to 10.1.

I have 6C92 that was a .dmg file and it wouldn't boot the iBook when I burned it in Disc Copy. I used the lastest version of Toast and burned as a disk image and it worked.

But, on startup, I get the new startup screen and then the picture distorts and crashes. That is with a reformat and clean install on my Rev 2 iBook. I gave up on the LONG install process and went back to 10.1.5 for the time being.

Guys.

Do you all really think it's going to be a succession of big cat names for the next fifteen years?

We're going to see a plethora of animals (for sure) but possibly also storm systems, scientific processes, musical symphonies (well, maybe not -- been there, done that) metallic compounds, colors of the rainbow, you name it...

I played w/ 6C98 at the Apple Store on the new widescreen iMac. They had the desktop to change like every 5 seconds. Nifty, but got annoying, so I had to change it. Now, I think this was just an isolated case, but it seemed no snappier to me. I would've tried logging out and in again, but I'm sure they have a password, and didn't want to do that.
I tried logging in AIM w/ iChat, but it kept cutting me off. Not sure why. I was not happy that the minimize to icon wasn't present, as I really wanted to see it. Hopefully they're fine tuning it, and put it back in.

Spring loaded folders were nice, I like the zooming effect. I do wish however, they'd add the spring functionality to the Dock folders.

Overall, it was pretty cool. Didn't seem too much snappier, but again, I think it just needed a logging out or something.

So, still no minimize-in-place?

What about Lynx.

Of course, Steve would pronounce it "Leenuux"

Hopefully just the UI is gone while they tinker with it (or save it for 10.3) and someone will figure how to switch it on. So we can play with it. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

Other observations on 6C98, from Apple Soho:

- Spring-loaded folders in column view do indeed work. Must've missed there before in Finder Preferences ("always open in a new window" has to be unchecked). Works nicely.

- This has been reported, but there so many polishing touches in Jaguar it's quite amazing. The little details that make a UI so great: an icon mask when selecting the icon picture in Get Info (instead of a square), folder animations when drag and dropping, a better algorithm when resizing columns in list view (not perfect, but so much better), new bright cursor icons, dock badges, the nifty new 'chasing arrows' animation, the clean effect of new sharper, glass-like widgets, a smarter reshuffling and ordering of Finder menus, on and on. But best of all:

- The search field in the Finder toolbar is incredibly useful. I mean, this is so far and above OS 9 that even the most skeptical OS 9 user will have to take a good and serious look at this OS. I can't tell you the difference this is going to make in usability, and workflow.

I'm positive that this (and column view) will be the two first things whatever follows XP is going to copy.

- No Services in standard contextual menus, alas.

- Nearly every Apple app has been improved. When you come upon one that's been mostly untouched, in fact, it's a bit disappointing.

All in all, a upgrade worth counting the days for.

But yeah. Unless you're the kind of person who watches TV and the radio while you work, you have to turn it off fairly quickly.

The machines I used at Apple Soho were unprotected. You had admin access, set to auto log-in, and pretty much no one was watching. Didn't have a chance to create a new user and check out the Simple(ton) Finder, but did reboot to see the new cute boot screen.

6C98 did seem snappier to me, but I didn't have the time to really put it to the test. Some UI animations are still a bit slow. Guess we'll see.

I think the disappearing cursor is a feature ...
I you look carefully it always disappears in places where you either type text or read text from ... look for instance carracho ... it disappears on the news and on personal mesages.

Stopped by Apple Soho again. A few extra tidbits:

<img src="http://look-designs.com/extras/jaguar_tidbits/webloc_icon.gif" alt=" - " />
Finally, a new .webloc icon.

<img src="http://look-designs.com/extras/jaguar_tidbits/current_column_indication.gif" alt=" - " />
The active column you're at now has a white arrow to indicate this.

<img src="http://look-designs.com/extras/jaguar_tidbits/find_info_icon_selection.gif" alt=" - " />
The much nicer icon selection as mentioned earlier in Find Info.

A few more notes. A few applications have been added to the /System/Library/Core Services directory: AppleFileServer, Kerberos, and OBEXAgent.

Here are some pics of the icons:
Kerberos icon:
<img src="http://benmedina.dyndns.org/images/Kerberos.png" alt=" - " />

OBEXAgent icon:
<img src="http://benmedina.dyndns.org/images/OBEXAgent.png" alt=" - " />

You can open the Kerberos application, which gives you a window that looks like this:
<img src="http://benmedina.dyndns.org/images/KerberosWindow.png" alt=" - " />

Clicking on the "Get Tickets" button opens up another app called Kerberos Login Server, which displays this window:

I can't comment on 6C98... but I can on 6C106. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

It was seeded just today (to people who only got 6C35 and none of the other ones), so who knows if this is the final or something like it.

It's definitly "GM" material, and is just as fast as OS 9 on this iMac G4 800.

One question that would make the Dock perfect. Can you drag & drop on to the popup menus?
This would replicate the functionality of the popup windows (early draws)from OS9.
