Apologies if this has been covered before

I've just taken some screenshots made up to show the new Windows File Sharing in 10.2 (all screenshots are from an NT4 Workstation)

Connecting via IP address
<img src="http://homepage.mac.com/lwernham/.Pictures/Win01.png" alt=" - " />

Dialog pops up for username/password (you need to have enabled Windows logon for the account you use here. This is done in the Accounts pane of System Preferences)
<img src="http://homepage.mac.com/lwernham/.Pictures/Win02.png" alt=" - " />

Mapped share (by IP address) in Explorer
<img src="http://homepage.mac.com/lwernham/.Pictures/Win03.png" alt=" - " />

Connecting via Rendezvous name
<img src="http://homepage.mac.com/lwernham/.Pictures/Win04.png" alt=" - " />

Mapped share (by Rendezvous name) in Explorer
<img src="http://homepage.mac.com/lwernham/.Pictures/Win05.png" alt=" - " />

Connecting via browse list
<img src="http://homepage.mac.com/lwernham/.Pictures/Win06.png" alt=" - " />

Connecting via Network Neighborhood
<img src="http://homepage.mac.com/lwernham/.Pictures/Win07.png" alt=" - " />

This is definitely something I've been waiting for, and will greatly ease the transition to the Mac platform for Windows users

Looks like the only one that gets created is the .ds_store (which doesn't show up if Explorer is set to hide files). Resource forks seem to simply get stripped off.

Do we get to choose what the comment is, or is it Samba 2.2.3a by default?

Not from the GUI that I can see.

Also, Windows apparently thinks that the Mac is a 'Windows NT 4.5 Server'

OS X 10.2 has some very nice interoperability features in it, there's no question. Oh, and nice screenshots; I like the fading borders.

I say this because when viewing a Mac from a PC the .ds_store file is really there, thats why you can see it, the resource files arent, at least, not as seperate files. The seperate resource forks only get created when copying files onto a PC _from_ a Mac, not the other way around.

When you map a network drive on the Windows box and then drag files to Windows Explorer you only get the data fork of the file, therefore you don't get any dotfiles other than the .ds_store one. If you connect to an SMB share from the Mac and then drag files to it with the Finder then you will get the dotfiles.

To give an example, when I mapped the drive in the screenshots in the first post, I tried dragging a text clipping to the C drive with Explorer. I ended up with a zero-byte file. I then connected to the C drive via the Finder and then dragged the same file across and it copied the zero-byte .textClipping file and a dotfile containing the data fork (as previous versions of OS X have done)

Of course with XP compatible with NTFS, I wish MS would include the Services for Macintosh from Windows 2000 Server, as it's still the most elegant method of connecting to a Windows box as it completely hides any sign of a data fork from Windows clients.

I'll have a go next time I get a chance to connect my Pismo to my Mum's Dell (unless someone else chimes in sooner)

However I've been running "Samba Sharing Package 1.5" with what seems to be the same features for a while, not without some difficulties.

Being Swedish and often using characters like , and in filenames the only way I could get this to work on both the Mac and PC was to format the shared drive as UFS and have the Mac connect to it locally thru SMB when using it.

Seeing you live in England it may be hard for you to try, but I would be very grateful if you could. I'm about to fill the 120gb drive with data but if SMB-sharing works smoother in Jaguar I'm ok with a months delay.

You want me to try to create files with accented characters in the name? Sure, I'll give it a go at work tomorrow.

You can edit this file:

/etc/smb.conf

But be careful (and keep a backup of the original file - please.)

Oh well... The joys of using pre-release software...

The 'Windows File Sharing' preference will no longer stay enabled (I click it and it clears itself instantly) and the 'Connect to Server' dialog isn't giving me a choice of connections (AppleTalk, Workgroup etc...) so I can't test any more of the networky side of things unless someone else has experienced this and knows of a fix.

Looks like what was causing it to de-select Windows File Sharing was disconnecting the network cable. As long as the cable is plugged in it works, but if there's no network cable connected I get these messages in the Console </font><blockquote><font size="1" face="Geneva, Verdana, Arial, sans-serif">quote:</font><hr /><font size="1" face="Geneva, Verdana, Arial, sans-serif">2002-07-30 11:39:13.847 writeconfig[770] Error: smb daemon is already running!

I just tried printing from both sides to no avail. On the PC running XP Pro, I plugged my printer in (Epson 777i) and shared it. The G4 running 6c106 could not find it on the network, even when I tried using the PC's direct IP in the IP printing section of Print Center. I then tried sharing the 777i on the G4 and printing from the PC and it couldn't find the 777i on the network. Using Dave on 10.1 I had the 777i shared with no problem.

I hope Apple fixes this. Printing to shared PC printers is a huge issue.

I hate to be the thorn on the rose stem... but next time... could you "Link" to the images instead of embedding all of them within the page when there's so many...? Not everyone has the bandwidth to grab all those images in a reasonable amount of time.

Just playing devil's advocate... sorry.

Back to topic at hand:
