Wow this was unexpected to me, I had thought Apple was moving towards an all-plastic interface but apparently they're sticking with aqua

That's too bad they aren't going all smooth stripes gloss, but the menu bar looks nice.

Dashboard looks a lot better than konfab also.

Hey checkout the new menubar in Tiger. The Apple menu is now highlighted with an aqua look and the right side which has the new Spotlight search feature. Now you have another object to skin. you can see it in the dashboard Preview quicktime

Let's just hope Apple can implement the idea with less resource overhead. I could never really "use" Konfab because it was always too bloated for my tastes.

I have to admit that my first response to the new Apple menu and search menu was that it looks like the Start menu of XP. Not nearly as rounded or bulbous, but still somewhat similar. In any case I think it looks cool.
We need less Democrats and Republicans, and more people that think for themselves.

That and didn't it constantly take up 25% of your CPU... even when inactive?

Something like that. I've tried a few different versions too hoping that it would improve. Can anyone report that it has since 1.5?

Widgets, written in JavaScript...

I'm guessing they bought Konfabulator or worked out some kind of deal to use the technology, otherwise it's a huge rip-off

What's the deal here?

I'm not saying it takes over, as in 100% CPU, but what Turias pointed out is true, the application itself consumes about 25% of available CPU. That seems a bit much from something that tells me it's cold outside...

As far as the Konfab thing. I'm here in the Moscone Center and from the demo there was one thing I was left wondering. When he hit the key to make the widgets appear ala Expose, I saw no way of getting them to stay when you go back to the desktop. We will see I guess.

It is interesting that in the Spotlight screenshots the Menu Bar clearly looks to have changed to a harder plastic look.

However, if you look in the Safari Menu Bar screen shot, it looks unchanged and there is no hard plastic to be seen.

seems like there is a lot of work to be done on tiger

But if you look in the quicktime movie showing the new Safari the menubar is clearly the new plastic look.

Maybe the screenshot on the Safari page is when it is running under Panther.

There seem to be a good bit of 'build inconsistencies" in the screenies.

The new prefs, Spotlight shots, .Mac Sync etc are all using a new UI look. "Metal" in form, "hard plastic" in appearance.

It does look like they've toned down the use of metal. As long as we can still use textures in themes that'll be a good thing.

Konfab is great, I own it. But with dashboard built into the system and all the quartz effects it looks so much nicer than konfab.

Yes, It's Launchbar, a program strangely similar to Spotlight.

Get what? SmoothStripes was just a merger of Gloss and Aqua Extreme, modding menu bar caps to my res. 1024 and the fill minus 4 pixels on each side, and using screens from Apple. For Launchbar I just used the image for Find under Text Fields in Themepark, inverted it, set as LaunchBar's icon.

I think Apple got inspired by the SS Gloss theme, or maybe not. But the resemblance is pretty striking. An other thing I notice is that the finally cleaned up the menu extras:

Which is nice.

Anyone wish they would also freshen up the scrolls and smaller push buttons?

Not even in its initial release did Konfabulator take that amount of cycles. This is nonsense.

The actual release of Konfabulator takes less than 0.1% CPU while inactive, inactive widgets do likewise.
Active widgets and active Konfabulator may take some 2-5% CPU for a limited amount of time. Widgets that cause constant activity are like open webpages with animated stuff. Those can be a cpu-hog, but that's a users decision.

All percentage relates to the use with a 1GHz 15" Alu PowerBook.

Usually the Dock eats many times the cycles of Konfabulator. I'd rather quit the Dock. Or drop shadows. Even the animation of the menu bar extras hits harder. The functional widgets of Konfabulator usually come at little or no cpu cost.

I agree with Kate. I am using Konfabulator 1.7 on an iBook G4 933. With 5 or 6 widgets open, many making system queries and executing applescripts etc, Konfabulator uses between 2% and 4% of my CPU. You do get the occasional badly written widget that is a bit of a hog, but I don't recall any version of Konfabulator ever taking more than 15% of my CPU. Nowhere near it. I've been using Konfabulator since 1.0, and am a Widget author myself.

The widgets are written in HTML/CSS/Javascript and displayed using Webkit.

LOL!

I've never used K more than few times because of the fact that it has some rather large memory requirements, each widget has it's own memory footprint. As far as I know version 1.7 hasn't changed that because that would mean the architechture of K would have to change.

I gave up trying the demo after 1.5 because of this issue.

Anyway, very funny
